Dr. Michael Misovich, associate professor of engineering at Hope College, was among the invited speakers during the national "Best Assessment Processes Symposium XI" organized by ABET Inc. (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) and held in Indianapolis, Ind., on Friday and Saturday, April 3-4.

ABET presents the annual symposium to provide interactive and lecture-based opportunities for applied science, computing, engineering and technology educators to learn about assessment methods and how they can be used to validate and improve student learning outcomes.  The two-day event included a variety of invited addresses and workshops, roundtable discussions and a keynote address.

Misovich presented "Results from an Ongoing Student-Centered Assessment Plan," describing some of the features of the assessment process used by the college's department of engineering for continuous improvement of the program.  His co-authors were Hope engineering colleagues Dr. Miguel Abrahantes, Dr. Jeff Brown, Dr. John Krupczak and Dr. Roger Veldman.

It was the second time in four years that Misovich was an invited speaker at the symposium.  In 2006, during "Best Assessment Processes Symposium VIII," he presented "A Case Study of Assessment vs. Grading: What are we Fighting About?"

Established in 1932 and recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, ABET is the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology, and is a federation of 30 professional and technical societies representing those fields.  ABET currently accredits some 2,800 programs at more than 600 colleges and universities nationwide.  ABET also provides leadership internationally through workshops, consultancies, memoranda of understanding and mutual recognition agreements, such as the Washington Accord.

Engineering instruction at Hope began in the 1970s.  Since 2000, Hope has offered a B.S. degree with a major in engineering that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD  21202-4012, telephone:  (410) 347-7700.

Misovich has been a member of the Hope faculty since 2002.  His research interests include phase equilibrium, equations of state, and engineering education and assessment.  He mentors Hope students through collaborative faculty-student research during both the school year and summer.

He has written several articles published in professional journals and made numerous presentations during professional conferences.  He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of "Chemical Engineering Progess," the flagship publication of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Prior to joining the Hope faculty he had been an associate professor of chemical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., since 1998.  He was an assistant professor of chemical engineering at VillanovaUniversity in Pennsylvania from 1991 to 1998, and an assistant professor of paper science at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 1988 to 1991.

Misovich graduated from MichiganStateUniversity in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, and Bachelor of Science degrees in computer science and chemical engineering.  Also at Michigan State University, he completed a Master of Science degree in chemical engineering in 1984; a Master of Science degree in computer science in 1988; and a doctorate in chemical engineering in 1988.
