The fall film series of the Hope College Knickerbocker Theatre will continue with the award-winning "The Class" on Monday-Thursday, Oct. 19-22, and Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Winner of the prestigious Palme D'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, "The Class" follows the year in the life of a French schoolteacher, Francois Begaudeau, working at a high school in a tough neighborhood of Paris. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom. As amusing and inspiring as the teenage students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeopardize any teacher's enthusiasm for the low-paying job. Francois insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. He is neither stuffy nor severe, and his frankness often takes the students by surprise, but his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods.
The "Boston Herald" has said that "Laurent Cantet's award winning French entry, 'The Class,' re-creates a contentious contemporary French schoolroom and lets the fireworks begin."
Tickets are $6 for regular admission and $5 for students and senior citizens, and can be purchased at the door or in advance at the ticket office in the front lobby of the DeVos Fieldhouse. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at (616) 395-7890.
The DeVos Fieldhouse is located at 222 Fairbanks Ave., between Ninth and 11th streets. The Knickerbocker Theatre is located in downtown Holland at 86 E. Eighth St., between College and Columbia avenues.
