One book to rule them all, one book to find them
One book to bring them all, and in the Pine Grove bind them.

HOLLAND - The department of English at Hope College will sponsor a marathon reading of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring" in the college's Pine Grove on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25.

The reading will extend from noon to 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, and from 10 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

All are welcome to sign up for 10-minute reading slots, either in advance at the department of English, located on the third floor of Lubbers Hall, or at the event itself if slots are still available.

"The reading is an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy together a great literary classic," said Dr. Curtis Gruenler, associate professor of English, who is currently teaching a course titled "J. R. R. Tolkien and Medieval Literature."

"The Fellowship of the Ring" is the first book in the acclaimed fantasy series "The Lord of the Rings," by British author J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973), which has sold more than 50 million copies since its publication in 1954-55. It was the basis of a 2001 film adaptation directed by Peter Jackson.

The department of English had previously organized a marathon reading of "The Fellowship of the Ring" in September 2002, followed by readings of the second book in the series, "The Two Towers," in April 2003 and the third, "The Return of the King," in September 2003.

Lubbers Hall is located at 126 E. 10th St., between College and Columbia avenues.  The Pine Grove is located in the central Hope campus, south of 10th Street between College and Columbia avenues.

The rain location for the event will be the main floor lounge of the DeWitt Center.  The DeWitt Center is located at 141. E. 12th St., facing Columbia Avenue at 12th Street.
