Guest artist David Burgess will perform Brazilian solo guitar music on Tuesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hope College Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland.

The "New York Times" has described Burgess as "technically in control and interpretively most persuasive."

First-prize winner in the Andrés Segovia Fellowship Competition in New York City, Burgess has also won top honors in the Ponce International Competition in Mexico City, the Guitar '81 Competition in Toronto and the 31st International Music Competition in Munich.

The program will include music by Brazilian guitarists Garoto (1915-55), who performed throughout the world with Carmen Mirance, and became a favorite performer of Duke Ellington and Art Tatem; Raphael Rabello (1962-95); Yamandu Coasta (b. 1980); and Carlos Jobim (1927-94).

Burgess began studying guitar at the Estudio de Arte Guitarrístico in Mexico City with the renowned Argentine guitarist Manuel López Ramos. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music at the University of Washington, and later earned a Diploma di Merito, while on full scholarship at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, where he studied with Oscar Ghiglia. From 1984 to 1987, he periodically received classes from the great Spanish maestro, Andrés Segovia.

Burgess' international appearances as soloist and chamber musician have taken him to concert halls throughout North and South America, Europe and the Far East. Through his extensive travels in both Spain and Latin America, Burgess has explored traditional guitar styles, along with many popular and folkloric types of music. Highlights of recent seasons include several concert tours of Europe; repeated recitals in New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix and Nashville; and numerous appearances as an orchestral soloist, including featured performances with the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York, and the American Chamber Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

A former guitar instructor at the University of Washington, and the Cornish Institute of the Arts, Burgess currently resides in New York City, where he has performed at Town Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall and LincolnCenter. He has recorded for Musical Heritage Society, Tritone, Athena and Camerata Records, and has also recorded Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with the Philharmonia Virtuosi on the CBS Masterworks label.

Individual tickets for the performance are $10 for regular admission, $7 for senior citizens, and $5 for children 18 and under, and are available at the ticket office in the main lobby of the DeVos Fieldhouse.  The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and may be called at (616) 395-7890.
