During its May meeting, the Hope College Alumni Association Board of Directors elected its officers and appointed five new members.
Lisa Bos, a 1997 graduate from Washington, D.C., who previously served as vice president, has been elected president. Michael McCarthy, a 1985 graduate from Weston, Mass., has been elected vice president. Anita Bateman, a 1998 graduate from San Antonio, Texas, has been elected secretary.
The board's new members are: Victoria Brunn, a 1984 graduate from Santa Monica, Calif.; Holly DeYoung, a 1990 graduate from Beaver Dam, Wis.; Todd Houtman, a 1990 graduate from Indianapolis, Ind.; Sa'eed Husaini, a Hope junior from Jos, Nigeria; and Garry Kempker, a 1974 graduate from Kalamazoo.
Colton Wright, a 2011 graduate from Tecumseh who was formerly Senior Class Representative, was appointed representative of the most recent graduating class. Andrea Converse of Lowell, formerly Junior Class Representative, was appointed Senior Class Representative. Bob Bieri, a 1983 graduate from Holland who has concluded service as president, will continue to serve on the board as immediate past-president.
The board members who have concluded their service to the board are: Kat Campbell, a 1999 graduate from Greensboro, N.C.; David Daubenspeck, a 1974 graduate from Oceanside, Calif.; Gene Haulenbeek, a 1972 graduate from Kalamazoo; Colleen Laskowski, a 2010 graduate from Redmond, Wash.; and Mark VanGenderen, a 1990 graduate from Weston, Fla.
° Victoria Brunn has been senior counsel in the Contracting Operations Group of Amgen Inc. since 2007. She completed a Master of Science degree in child development at the University of California-Davis in 1988, and a juris doctor degree at Loyola Law School in 2004. Her career experience has also included serving as a senior child life specialist at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Calif., from 1986 to 1993; as coordinator of child life services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif., from 1994 to 2004; and as an attorney with K&R Law Group LLP from 2004 to 2006 and with Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP from 2006 to 2007. Among other community service and involvement, she provided public counsel as a pro-bono attorney during 2006-07 and is a past vice president and member of the board of directors of the Starlight Children's Foundation. She majored in psychology and minored in economics at Hope, where her activities included the Alpha Gamma Phi sorority, Nykerk Cup competition, "Anchor" and pep band.
° Holly DeYoung has worked in human resources at Beaver Dam Community Hospital for more than 10 years, following eight years in human resources or clerical positions with other employers. She is active in her church, and her community involvement has also included serving as co-president of the elementary PTO, organizing a committee for parents of gifted children and assisting with Girl Scouts. She completed a psychology/sociology composite major and minor in Spanish at Hope, where her activities included the Sigma Sigma sorority, Pull tug-of-war and Nykerk Cup competition. Her husband, Jim, is a 1988 Hope graduate. They have two children, Tessa and Becca.
° Todd Houtman is a brand marketing manager with Eli Lilly and Company. He has been with the company for 19 years, with his previous positions there having included serving as a business analyst and sales representative. He completed an MBA at Michigan State University in 1992. His community involvement includes serving as a member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation volunteer staff for fundraising activities, and membership in Traders Point Christian Church. His involvement in the life of the college has included participating in the alumni outreach program, through which he has contacted students considering Hope, and working through the Office of Career Services to advise graduating seniors on careers within the pharmaceutical industry. He majored in political science and minored in physics at Hope, where his activities included the Arcadian Fraternity, serving on the InterFraternity Council and participating in the Washington Honors Semester.
° Sa'eed Husaini is interested in a career that involves international service and leadership. He is pursuing international studies composite and political science majors, and minoring in French. He participated in the Phelps Scholars Program as a freshman, and remained involved in the program as a resident assistant in its Scott Hall home this past year. His activities at the college have also included the International Relations Club, which he served this past year as publicity chair; the Pull tug-of-war; Black Student Union; WTHS; and the college's Nu Beta chapter of the Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity. He has also worked as a campaign intern with the Ottawa County Republicans.
° Garry Kempker has been a vice president and trust relationship officer with Greenleaf Trust of Kalamazoo for 11 years. He has spent 33 years in the trust and investment industry, with expertise in personal trust administration and management, and estate planning and settlement. A Certified Trust and Financial Advisor, he has also attended the American Bankers Association National Graduate Trust School and the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He is a member and past president of the Kalamazoo Kiwanis Club, and a member of the Kalamazoo Civic Theater Board, the Constance Brown Hearing Center Board, the executive Board of St. Joseph's Krasl Concours on the Bluff and Hope Reformed Church in South Haven. His community service through the years has also included serving as president of the St. Joseph Kiwanis Club, a founding member of the South Haven Community Foundation and a member of the boards of MRC Industries, the Michigan Maritime Museum and the South Haven Harbor Commission. He majored in business administration and psychology at Hope, where his activities also included the Arcadian fraternity. Garry and his wife Gloria reside in Kalamazoo.
