Dr. Yooyeun Hwang, professor of education at Hope College, has been honored for her
teaching while at the Catholic University of Korea during a spring 2011 sabbatical.
Hwang was recognized as an excellent instructor based on the teaching evaluations
completed by the university's students at the end of the semester. She taught three
courses at the university last spring, one in "Educational Psychology" for undergraduate
students and two sections of "Reading and Cognition" for graduate students.
Hwang has been a member of the Hope faculty since 1996. At Hope she teaches courses
including "Educational Psychology," the "Leaning and Learning Strategies" seminar
in the department of psychology, and the interdisciplinary "Encounter with Cultures"
course. Her research projects have included studies concerning students' learning
and their learning strategies and of college students' development of reflective thinking.
Among other professional activities, she has served as a reviewer for professional
research organizations such as Midwestern Education Research Association (MWERA) and
American Educational Research Association (AERA).
Originally from South Korea, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Sacred Heart
College for Women in Seoul, South Korea, in 1983; her Master of Arts at the University
of California in Santa Barbara in 1990; and her doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
in 1996.
