The 2009 French film “Welcome” will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. at the Granberg Room of the Van Wylen Library and on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. in room 135 of the Martha Miller Center for Global Communication.

The campus community is invited.  Admission is free.

“Welcome” follows Bilal, a 17-year-old Kurdish refugee who has struggled his way through Europe in attempt to reunite with his girlfriend, who has immigrated to England.  When he is stopped in France, he decides to swim the English Channel to complete his journey.  While training at a local swimming pool, he meets Simon, a middle-aged swim instructor who agrees to help him in order to regain the affection of his wife but subsequently grows to care about Bilal and his plight.

“Welcome” is in French with English subtitles and has a running time of 109 minutes.

The film is being presented in the French Films series of the French section of the department of modern and classical languages.  The educational films presented through the series document important aspects of global French-speaking cultures.

The Martha Miller Center for Global Communication is located at 257 Columbia Ave., at the corner of Columbia Avenue and 10th Street.  The Van Wylen Library is located at 53 Graves Place (11th Street, between 10th and 12th streets on College Avenue.
