The Hope College Concert Series will feature The Soil & The Sun on Tuesday, April 9, at 8 p.m. at the Park Theatre in Holland.

The Soil & The Sun originated in 2008 as a two-piece act based out of a basement in Chicago, Ill., and is now an eight-piece group based out of Grand Rapids. In characteristically odd fashion, the band describes its sound as “corn-fed, Michigan-made New Mexican Space Music, or Experiential Spiritual Folk.”

“Michigan Live” has called Soil’s eight-piece debut, “Wake Up, Child,” “cohesive and elevating—an optimistic debut”—fitting for a band who would go on to release a follow-up in under a year’s time. The band’s sophomore album, “What Wonder is the Universe!,” has garnered similar acclaim, winning the 2012 Jammie Award for best album of the year. “Silver Tongue” has called the album “inspiring and unusual,” complementing the overall sense of wonder fostered throughout the nine lush tracks.

Kellen & Me, currently touring with the band, will be opening for the evening. Kellen & Me is a one-man “electro-indie-folk-rock” ensemble that evokes both ’60s Lo-Fi and futuristic High-Fi.

The doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and Kellen & Me will begin performing at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for Hope students, and are available online at tickets.hope.edu/ticketing and at the ticket office in the main lobby of the DeVos Fieldhouse.  The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can be called at (616) 395-7890. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

The DeVos Fieldhouse is located at 222 Fairbanks Ave., between Ninth and 11th streets. The Park Theatre is located at 248 South River Ave., at the intersection at River Avenue and 10th Street.
