Five Hope College graduating seniors or recent graduates have received recognition through the prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship program of the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Seniors James Bour of Kalamazoo and Andreana Rosnik of Shelby Township have each received honorable mention through the program.
In addition, 2012 Hope graduates Elena Caruthers and John Patrick Lutz each received fellowships, and 2012 Hope graduate Hilary Bultman received honorable mention. Lutz had received honorable mention last year as a Hope senior.
It is the sixth year in a row that multiple graduating seniors or recent alumni have received fellowships or honorable mention in the program. The NSF awarded 2,000 of the fellowships nationwide this year, and recognized another 1,809 students with honorable mention.
The awards are for students in the early stage of pursuing a research-based master’s or doctoral degree in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. The fellowships are for up to three years, and pay a $30,000 annual stipend and a $10,500 cost-of-education allowance.
Bour is a chemistry major who plans to conduct graduate work at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in chemistry (chemical catalysis). While at Hope, he has been conducting collaborative research with Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, who is an assistant professor of chemistry and Towsley Research Scholar. He is the son of Dr. James Bour of Kalamazoo, and a 2009 graduate of Hackett Catholic Central High School.
Rosnik is majoring in chemistry and mathematics, and plans to conduct graduate work at the University of California-Berkeley in chemistry (chemical theory, models and computational methods). While at Hope, she has been conducting collaborative research with Dr. William Polik, who is the Edward and Elizabeth Hofma Professor of Chemistry. She is the daughter of Andrew and Philomena Rosnik of Shelby Township, and a 2009 graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory.
Caruthers graduated from Hope with majors in dance and engineering (with a mechanical-engineering emphasis). She is pursuing graduate study in mechanical engineering at The Ohio State University. While at Hope, she conducted collaborative research with Dr. Katie Polasek, assistant professor of engineering, and Krisanne Chapin at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids. She is the daughter of Rodger and Darlene Caruthers of Des Plaines, Ill., and a 2008 graduate of Maine West High School.
Lutz graduated from Hope with a chemistry major. He is pursuing graduate study in chemistry (chemical synthesis) at Princeton University. While at Hope, he conducted collaborative research with Dr. Jeffrey Johnson. He is the son of John and Michelle Lutz of Canton, and a 2008 graduate of Plymouth Christian Academy.
Bultman graduated from Hope with a biology major. She is pursuing graduate study in the life sciences (ecology) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While at Hope, she conducted collaborative research with Dr. Kathy Winnett-Murray, professor of biology, and during two summers away, in Costa Rica and Iceland. She is the daughter of Dr. Thomas and Judy Bultman of Hamilton, and a 2008 graduate of Hamilton High School.
