Three Hope College athletes have been recognized for their performances in football and men’s soccer, respectively — football’s Michael Atwell, volleyball’s Lauren Hazekamp and men’s soccer’s Will Morlock.

Atwell, a senior quarterback from Geneseo, Ill., (Geneseo HS), has been chosen the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Offensive Player of the Week in football.

Hazekamp, a sophomore setter from Fruitport (Fruitport HS), is the MIAA Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball.

Morlock, a junior goalie from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS), is the MIAA men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Atwell completed 23 of 33 passes for 442 yards and five touchdowns as the Flying Dutchmen defeated North Park (Ill.) 41-21, in their season opener. Four of Atwell’s TD strikes came in the second half as Hope rallied from an early 14-3 deficit.

Atwell is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time in his career. He is being recognized along with Albion cornerback Mike Vandermus for defense and Trine placekicker Tyler Keck for special teams.

Hazekamp dished out 106 assists at 11.8 per set and added 24 digs and six blocks in leading the Flying Dutch to a sweep of all three of their MIAA opponents for the week. She had 41 assists, nine digs and three blocks in a win over Olivet and 35 assists, eight digs and three blocks as Hope swept Trine.

Hazekamp’s efforts helped Hope post a team hitting percentage of .298 for the week. It is the first time she has been named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week in her career. The Player of Week honor went to Calvin College’s Maggie Kamp.

Morlock allowed only one goal in leading the Flying Dutchmen to a pair of nonconference wins. He had three saves in 2-0 victory against Madonna, then turned away eight shots as Hope posted a 2-1 victory over nationally ranked Wheaton (Ill.).

Morlock is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Calvin forward Travis Vegter claimed the weekly award on offense.
