The Hope College Knickbocker Fall Film Series will present “The Girls in the Band” on Monday-Saturday, Oct. 7-12, at 7:30 p.m.

Judy Chaikin, the director and producer of the film, will be present for the showing on Monday, Oct. 7, and will participate in a question-and-answer period following the film.  Chaikin is a graduate of AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women and is best known for writing, producing and directing the Emmy nominated PBS documentary, “Legacy of the Hollywood Blacklist.” In 2004 she received her second Emmy nomination for the documentary “Building on a Dream: The NoHo Art Project.”

“The Girls in the Band” tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 20s to the present day.  These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continue today to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them.

Tickets for all of the films are $6 for regular admission and $5 for senior citizens, Hope College faculty and children, and are available at the ticket offices in the main lobby of the DeVos Fieldhouse (222 Fairbanks Ave.) and the Events and Conferences Office located downtown in the Anderson-Werkman Financial Center (100 E. Eighth St.).  Both offices are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at (616) 395-7890.
