The Hope College baseball team has chosen four captains for the 2015 season: seniors Ben Pearson and Devin Schaefers and juniors Jake Chipka and Austin Goodyke.

Pearson is a senior first baseman from Madison, Wisconsin (West HS). He is majoring in history.

“Ben will be one of the anchors in our defense and will hit in the middle of the lineup,” Hope coach Stu Fritz said. “He loves the game and is a tireless worker.”

Schaefers is a senior outfielder from Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS). He is pursuing a major in economics and a minor in Spanish.

“Devin is just a ballplayer, can play anywhere and understands the game very well,” Fritz said. “He will also hold people accountable on the field. He plays the game fast all the time. We love having him on our team.”

Chipka is a junior pitcher from Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS). He is majoring in exercise science.

“Jake is a high-energy kid and also a very hard worker in the weight room,” Fritz said. “He and Austin will be the leaders of the pitching staff. He is an all-in type of player.”

Goodyke is a junior pitcher from Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS). He is pursuing an exercise science major.

“Austin is a leader in the weight room and has been a conference starter for two years,” Fritz said. “He will set the example for others with his work ethic and competitive spirit.”
