Two Hope Players Honored By The MIAA

Two Hope College women’s soccer players are receiving recognition from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association: senior Erin Jipping and sophomore Jennifer Thelen.

Jipping is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for games played through Sept. 14, while Thelen is the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Jipping scored a goal in each game as the Flying Dutch opened MIAA play with three consecutive victories: defeating Albion 2-0, Adrian in overtime 2-1 and Trine 3-0.

The midfielder from Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week for the first time this season and the second time in her career.

Thelen anchored a Hope defense that allowed only one goal in three games and gave up an average of five shots per game.

The center back from Bloomfield Hills (Andover HS), is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Hope is now 4-2 overall on the season. The Flying Dutch return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16, with a match at Olivet. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Hope Senior Receives MIAA Recognition

Hope College’s Ben Zank has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for meets through Sept. 14.

The senior from Midland, Michigan (Dow HS), finished 37th among 371 runners at the Michigan State University Invitational in East Lansing Friday. Zank covered the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 32 seconds.

Zank is receiving the first MIAA Runner of the Week honor of his career.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the MIAA Invitational hosted by Kalamazoo College.

WOMEN’S GOLF  

Hope Sophomore Lauded For Her Play On Links

Hope College’s Britni Gielow has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Golfer of the Week for meets through Sept. 14.

The sophomore from Norton Shores, Michigan, (Muskegon Mona Shores HS), fired a 6-over-par 78 to earn medalist honors in leading the Flying Dutch to a first-place finish among 10 schools at the Manchester (Indiana) Fall Invitational.  

Earlier in the week, Gielow shot a 79 to help Hope set a school record with a team score of 317 at the North Central (Illinois) Fall Classic.

Gielow is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Hope returns to action this weekend, Sept. 19-20, at the 36-hole Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament.
