Diver Jean Luc Miralda secured runner-up honors in 3-meter diving at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships on Friday by surpassing his school record with a six-dive score of 544.85 points.

The sophomore from Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Honduras American), broke Jim Mitchell’s 1989 school record during Friday’s preliminaries at Holland Community Aquatic Center with a total of 527.10.

The Flying Dutchmen are fourth in the team standings with 424 points. They trail Calvin (613), Kalamazoo (476) and Albion (441) heading into Saturday’s finale that begins at 10 a.m. with preliminaries.

Freshman Kevin Franz of Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein HS), placed third in 3-meter diving with 464.65 points. Teammate Kyle Weck of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS), was seventh with a score of 399.95.

The 200 medley relay finished third. Sophomore Christian Otteman of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS), junior Jeff Zita of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), junior Nathan Rommel of Overland Park, Kansas (Blue Valley NW), and junior Samuel Gallmeyer of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), clocked a time of 1:36.27.

Otteman placed fifth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:12.86. Senior Grant Ludema of Ada, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), was 14th in 4:32.11.

Three from Hope made the 100 butterfly final: Rommel in fifth at 52.28, sophomore Ryan Johnson of Milford, Michigan (International Academy HS), in sixth at 52.41, and freshman Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS), in seventh at 52.57.

Three more Flying Dutchmen swam in the consolation final: junior Micah Sall of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS), in 10th at 53.13, sophomore Danny Sullivan of Columbus, Ohio (Upper Arlington HS), in 14th at 53.89 and junior Trevor Billinghurst of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), in 16th at 54.69.

Junior Duncan MacLean of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), came in sixth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.57.

Two Flying Dutchmen made the consolation final: senior Christopher Waechter of Ventura, California (Foothill Technology) in 12th at 1:46.25 and Gallmeyer in 16th at 1:48.73.

Three Hope swimmers raced in the 100 backstroke championship final:

Freshman Nick Olen of Midland, Michigan (Lyons Township HS), placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.72.

Two more Flying Dutchmen made the consolation final: sophomore Jonathon Maat of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), in 11th at 1:01.03 and sophomore Trevor Wagoner of Hixson, Tennessee (McCalle HS) in 12th at 1:01.34.

 

Three reached the 100 backstroke final: freshman Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Michigan (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep), in fifth at 52.82, Otteman in sixth at 53.80 and sophomore Danny Sullivan of Columbus, Ohio (Upper Arlington HS), in eighth at 55.68.
