The Hope College jazz studies area will present three concerts across Monday-Thursday, April 11-14.

Jazz chamber ensembles will perform on Monday, April 11; there will be a vocal jazz recital on Tuesday, April 12; and the Jazz Arts Collective and Contemporary Ensemble will perform on Thursday, April 14.  All three concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the John and Dede Howard Recital Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The public is invited to all three events.  Admission is free.

The jazz chamber ensembles concert on Monday, April 11, will feature the Vanguard Ensemble, the Concord Ensemble, the Prestige Ensemble and the Blue Note Ensemble.

The Vanguard Ensemble, coached by Mike Van Lente, will perform “Satin Doll,” by Duke Ellington; and “No More Blues,” by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The Concord Ensemble, coached by Tom Lockwood, will perform “No More Blues,” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “Bluesette,” by Toots Thielemans; and “Autumn Leaves,” by Kosma/Prévert. The Prestige Ensemble, coached by Brian Coyle, will perform “Sea Journey,” by Chick Corea; “West Coast Blues,” by Wes Montgomery; and “Hang Up Your Hang Ups,” by Herbie Hancock. The Blue Note Ensemble, coached by Steve Talaga, will perform “Israel,” by John Carisi; and “Long Ago and Far Away,” by Kern Gershwin.

The vocal jazz recital on Tuesday, April 12, will feature performances by multiple students coached by faculty member Edye Evans Hyde.  Selections will include “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “You’d Be So Easy to Love” and “What Is This Thing Called Love,” by Cole Porter; “Skylark,” by Hoagy Carmichael; “Round Midnight,” by Thelonious Monk; “Corcovado,” “How Insensitive” and “Girl from Iphanema,” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “My Funny Valentine,” by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart; “Fly Me to the Moon,” by Bart Howard; “Summertime,” by George and Ira Gershwin; “Bye Bye Black Bird,” by Ray Henderson and Mort Dixon; “Deedles Blues,” by Frank Foster; “It Had to Be You,” by Isham Jones and Gus Kahn; “Body and Soul,” by Johnny Green, Edward Heyman, Robert Sour and Frank Eyton; and “That’s Life,” by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon.

During the concert on Thursday, April 14, the Contemporary Ensemble, coached by Brian Coyle, will perform “I Mean you,” by Thelonious Monk; “Just the Two of Us,” by Grover Washington Jr.; “Shenandoah” (Traditional); “Angel from Montgomery,” by John Prine; and “Overjoyed,” by Stevie Wonder.  The Jazz Arts Collective, directed by Brian Coyle, will perform “Sundown,” by Alexis Cuadrado; “Searching for Sarah,” by Colin Rensch; “Keep the Pocket,” by Ivan Akansiima; and “Lucky’s Number,” by Alan Ferber.

The Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts is located at 221 Columbia Ave., between Ninth and 10th streets.
