A self-described whale of a ride has brought Brian Morehouse 500 wins and counting with the Hope College women’s basketball team.

The fourth-ranked and unbeaten Flying Dutch gave Morehouse another milestone victory with a 95-58 win against Saint Mary’s on Senior Day Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse. Morehouse is now 500-76 in 20 seasons as head coach.

Morehouse is the 28th NCAA Division III women’s basketball coach all-time to reach 500 wins.

“There’s no better place than Hope. There’s no better place that I’d rather do this,” Morehouse told an enthused DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,130 during a post-game ceremony honoring him. “I have great players. I get way too much of the credit honestly.”

The feat capped an afternoon celebration with Morehouse’s current and past players. His 2006 national championship team was recognized at halftime for the 10th anniversary of its accomplishment.

The 2015-16 Flying Dutch raised their record to 21-0 overall and 13-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title with a dominant performance from the opening tip.

Hope jumped to a 21-4 lead during the first quarter by matching its best defensive performance in a quarter this season. It was the third time the Flying Dutch held an opponent to four points in a quarter this season.

Senior guard Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) scored a career-high 19 points to lead Hope.

Senior forward Maura McAfee of Midland, Michigan (Midland HS) netted 16 points.

Junior guard Angelique Gaddy of Caledonia, Michigan (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) added 11 points.

All 14 Hope players scored against Saint Mary’s, which fell to 1-21 overall and 1-12 in MIAA play.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 10 with a non-league game against Rochester, Michigan at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope can clinch a share of its 15th MIAA championship — and 13th under Morehouse’s guidance — on Saturday, Feb. 13 at home against Albion.

The Flying Dutch’s lead in the MIAA standings over second-place Calvin grew to two games after the Knights lost to Trine on Saturday.
