Hope College is hosting a special event this month to benefit Purple Community®, Van Andel Institute's grassroots fundraising program for its biomedical research and science education in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

A Purple Community women’s and men’s soccer doubleheader on Wednesday Oct. 19 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium will support Van Andel Institute’s efforts and help fund an internship for a Hope College student at Van Andel Institute.

The 4 p.m. women’s match will feature the Flying Dutch taking on Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Olivet.

The 7 p.m. men’s match will see the Flying Dutchmen playing MIAA foe Adrian.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth and younger. They cover admission for both games. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Hope College ticket office by calling (616) 395-7890 during regular business hours.

Hope players will wear purple jerseys in pregame on the sideline during their matches. There are special purple concessions offers scheduled. Van Andel Institute Purple Community merchandise will be available for purchase.

One-hundred percent of a Purple Community fundraising event goes to support Van Andel Institute scientists who are studying more than 20 different diseases. Biomedical research is expensive and government funding of scientific research is at a historic low. It currently takes more than 10 years and a billion dollars to bring a new drug or treatment from the laboratory bench to a patient’s bedside.
