National Academic Honors
Awarded Hope Athletes

July 22, 2006

WOMEN'S GOLF
The National Golf Coaches Association has named two players All-American Scholars -- Julie Hoogerhyde Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) and Holly Sneller of Holland (Hamilton HS). 

SWIMMING & DIVING
The women's swimming and diving team have received a national all-academic award from the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America.  With a 3.54 cumulative grade point average, the Flying Dutch had the fourth best GPA among all NCAA Division III teams.

Seven Hope swimmers were named individual Academic All-Americans for earning a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average during the 2005-06 school year. 

TRACK & FIELD
Six Hope track athletes have been honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  To qualify for the association's national All-Academic team, athletes needed to have qualified for the NCAA Division III championships while maintaining a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA during the 2005-06 school year.

Men's and Women's Basketball
Both Set DIII Attendance Records

July 16, 2006

The first season of Hope College basketball at the new DeVos Fieldhouse can be described in one word -- spectacular!

The NCAA has announced that Hope has become the first Division III institution to lead the nation in attendance in both men's and women's basketball in the same season.

It was announced earlier that the men's basketball team had topped Division III with an average of 2,928 fans per game.

The latest announcement is that the women's basketball team also led DIII with the division's highest per-game average in history at 1,329 fans per game. The runnerup was UW-Stout with an average of 1,172.

Hope Will Host Women's
Basketball National Finals

July 12, 2006

Four months ago the Hope College Flying Dutch brought home the 2006 national championship trophy in women's basketball.

Now the Flying Dutch will get an opportunity to bring home the entire national championship tournament!

The NCAA has selected Hope to host the 2008 and 2009 Division III women's basketball semi-finals and championship game at the college's new DeVos
Fieldhouse.

Hope Teams Honored for
Academics in 05-06 by MIAA

June 30, 2006

Seven Hope athletic teams have been presented the 2005-06 Team GPA Award by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

The award is presented to conference teams who achieved a 3.300 or better grade point average during the entire academic year.

This program, now in its eighth year, is administered by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges.

Hope Athletes Named
to MIAA Academic Honor Roll

June 28, 2006

The 2005/2006 Academic Honor Roll of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) includes 172 student-athletes from Hope College.

The academic awards program is administered by the faculty representatives of the MIAA member colleges.

The 17th annual Academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the year.

Hope Has Best Finish
in NACDA Directors' Cup

June 28, 2006

Hope College had its best finish ever in the annual NACDA Directors' Cup standings for the 2005-06 school year.

Hope ranked 12th among 419 NCAA Division III colleges in the standings compiled by the National Association of Colleague Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

The NACDA Directors' Cup standings are based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA championship events.

Sports Hall of Fame
Honors Glenn Van Wieren

June 25, 2006

Hope College men's basketball coach Glenn Van Wieren will be honored by the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame with the organization's Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame honors athletes, owners, and coaches from West Michigan who have achieved prominence in their sports on a local, state, or national level.

Originally founded by the Grand Rapids City Commission in 1972, the Sports Hall of Fame was reestablished in 1995 and is now housed on the upper deck of the Van Andel Arena.

AT&T Phone Book Features
National Champions

June 25, 2006

Hope's NCAA national champion women's basketball team is featured on the cover of the new AT&T telephone book for the Holland/Zeeland area.

Approximately 30,000 copies of the book are being distributed to several thousand residences and businesses.

The cover photo shows members of the team hoisting the national championship trophy after the team defeated Southern Maine in the title game in Springfield, Mass.

Rich Ray Elected to National Hall of Fame

May 30, 2006

Dr. R. Richard Ray of the Hope College faculty has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the highest honor in the athletic training profession.

He will be inducted during an awards banquet on Saturday, June 17, held in conjunction with NATA's national 57th Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia in Atlanta, Ga., on Wednesday-Sunday, June 14-18.

Election to the Hall of Fame recognizes significant contributions on the state, regional and national levels, and professional excellence, volunteer service and community outreach. Hall of Fame inductees are nominated and selected by their athletic training peers, and have been active NATA members for at least 25 years.

Hope Has Three
Track/Field All-Americans

May 28, 2006

Hope had three All-America performances at the NCAA Division III track and field championships held at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. from May 25-27.

The Flying Dutch finished in a tie for 33rd place among 74 women's teams with nine points while the Flying Dutchmen tied for 50th among 70 men's teams with four points.

Junior Ryan TerLouw of Pella, Iowa (Pella HS) achieved NCAA All-America status in the 1500-meter run for a second consecutive year by finishing fifth in the event. A year ago TerLouw was seventh at nationals in the event. Defending national champion Nick Symmonds led the field of 12 runners with a time of 3:49.24. TerLouw was timed in 3:51.72. This is the third straight year that Hope has had an All-American in the 1,500 and the fourth time in school history. TerLouw also competed in the 5,000-meter run finishing 17th (16:22.78) in the field of 18 runners.

Flying Dutchmen Top DIII
in Home Basketball Attendance

May 27, 2006

Hope basketball fans embraced the college's new DeVos Fieldhouse by attending games this past season in record numbers. So much so that Hope has again topped all NCAA Division III men's basketball teams in average home attendance.

Leading the nation in home attendance is nothing new to Hope. This marks the fourth straight year that the Dutchmen have been on top. The previous three were at the Holland Civic Center where Hope played its home games for 52 years before moving to DeVos.

This is the eighth time in school history that Hope has been the men's basketball attendance leader. This past season's average of 2,928 fans per game over 18 dates topped runnerup Illinois Wesleyan by nearly 500 fans per game. IWU averaged 2,470 fans per home date while MIAA rival Calvin ranked third with an average of 2,089 (14 dates).

Hope Qualifies Six for
Track & Field Nationals

May 21, 2006

Hope will be represented by six athletes when the NCAA Division III track and field championships get underway Thursday at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. The athletes -- four women and two men -- have qualified in five events.

Hope will have three entrants in the women's pole vault. Junior Jennifer VanderMeer of Holland, Mich. (Holland HS) will be bidding for All-America honors for a third consecutive year. She was the national silver medalist in both 2004 and 2005 and is seeded fifth (12-5 1/2) in the field of 19 vaulters. Senior Laura Borovsky of Livonia, Mich. (Churchhill HS) is heading back to nationals for a second year seeded 19th (11-7 3/4). Senior Maureen Warfield of Adrian (Adrian HS) rounds out the vaulting trio seeded 11th (12-0).

Junior Ryan Ter Louw of Pella, Iowa (Pella HS) and senior Jeff Weber of Grandville, Mich. (Grandville HS) are returning NCAA All-Americans in the 1,500-meter run. Weber finished seventh in the 1,500 at the 2004 national meet while TerLouw was the seventh place finisher a year ago. TerLouw is seeded seventh (3:50.70) at this year's meet while Weber is seeded 11th (3:52.09). TerLouw has also qualified for the 5,000-meter run seeded fourth (14:31.29).

Kylee Brouwer Named
Softball All-American

May 19, 2006

Hope College sophomore catcher Kylee Brouwer of Hudsonville, Mich. (Hudsonville HS) has been voted a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III softball All-American by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association.

The announcement was made Thursday, May 18, as a prelude to the NCAA Division III championships beging played in Raleigh, N.C.

Brouwer has been named a third team honoree. She is the fourth Hope catcher to receive All-American honors joining Deb Vashaw (1992 & 1993), Amy Moeckel (1996) and Carrie Scott (1999 and 2001).

California Hometown Honors Ray Smith

May 15, 2006

Ray Smith, who has spent more than 35 years teaching and coaching at Hope College, is being honored by his California hometown.

Smith, who is a professor of kinesiology and director of athletics for men at Hope, is being inducted into the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame in California on Monday, May 22.

Established four years ago, the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame was created to honor athletes, coaches, athletic administrators and community leaders who have brought fame and honor to the city of Riverside. The hall of fame offers recognition in four categories: pre-1960 athletes, post-1960 athletes, coaches and service to the community.

In addition to Smith, who is being recognized as a pre-1960 athlete, those being honored this year include Gary Adams, a Riverside native who coached baseball at UCLA for decades - and who happens to have been Smith's roommate when they were students at UCLA; Nate DeFrancisco, a longtime coach and administrator at Riverside Community College; Walker Evans, an off-road racing champion from Riverside; the late Jess Hill, a Riverside athlete who went on to coach and serve as athletic director at USC; Cheryl Miller, a Riverside athlete whose basketball career included a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics; and Jerry Tarkanian, who coached at Riverside Community College for five years before going on to schools including Long Beach State, UNLV and Fresno State.

Three Softball Players
Named All-Region

May 12, 2006

Three members of Hope's MIAA championship softball team have received All-Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The Central Region team honors NCAA Division III players from colleges in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.

Named to the Central Region first team for the second consecutive years were outfielder Jessica Regnerus and catcher Kylee Brouwer. Both are sophomores who graduated from Hudsonville, Mich. High School.  They were also named to the All-MIAA first team.

Hope Wins MIAA Commissioner's
Cup a Record 28th Time

Hope College has won the Commissioner's Cup of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for a record 28th time.

The Commissioner's Cup standings are determined using the cumulative standings from the 18 MIAA-sponsored sports for men and women.

Hope has won the Commissioner's Cup six straight years and eight of the past nine years.

Flying Dutch Headed to
NCAA Softball Regional

May 9, 2006

MIAA softball champion Hope (30-12) will play in an eight-team NCAA Division III regional tournament in Rock Island, Ill. beginning Thursday, May 11, and continuing through Monday, May 15.

Champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the seventh-seeded Flying Dutch (30-12) play the second-seeded host Augustana Vikings (31-9) in Thursday's fourth game of the double elimination tournament.

The Flying Dutch gained the MIAA's automatic berth to the 59-team national tournament by winning the conference tournament this past weekend.

Hope Golfers Headed
to NCAA Tournament

May 1, 2006

Hope's MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen have received a bid to compete in the NCAA Division III men's golf championships to be held May 8-11 in Lincoln, Neb.

Coach Bob Ebels' Dutchmen will competing as a team in the national tournament for the first time since 2000 and the fourth time in school history.

The four-day 72-hole tournament will be played at the Firethorn Golf Club and will be hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University.  The field will include 120 golfers representing 23 teams as well of five individual invitees.  Hope is one of three teams invited from the Great Lakes region.  The others are Otterbein, Ohio and Ohio Wesleyan.

Hope College Scholar-Athletes Honored

Awards as the outstanding senior athletes among Hope College graduates in the class of 2006 were presented to two students during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday (April 27).

Kurtis Blohm of Wilmington, Ohio (Wilmington HS) was presented the Otto van der Velde All-Campus Award while Bria Ebels of Holland (Holland HS) received the John Schouten award.

Cross Country Teams
Honored for Academics

April 6, 2006

For an unprecedented 16th consecutive year, both Hope College cross country teams are being honored nationally for academic excellence.

The College Cross Country Coaches Association recently announced its Team Academic All-Americans for the fall 2005 season.  As they have for every year since 1990, coach Mark Northuis' men's and women's teams are on the honor roll.  Northuis has coached the Hope cross country teams since 1988.

Hope is the only college in all of NCAA Division III to achieve this honor for both of its teams (men and women) for 16 consecutive years.

Sports Illustrated Highlights Bria Ebels

April 4, 2006

Senior Bria Ebels is featured in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated magazine in the "Faces in the Crowd" column for keying Hope's national women's basketball championship performance.

Ebels was voted the outstanding player of the Final Four scoring 18 points in the championship game victory over the University of Southern Maine.

She becomes the fifth Hope athlete to appear in SI's "Faces in the Crowd".  Others who were honored are: Victor Breithaupt, baseball (1991); Jennifer Smith, tennis (2000); Josh Boss, swimming (2001) and Kelly Parker, swimming (2002).


Brian Morehouse an All-star Coach

Honored as the NCAA Division III women's basketball coach of the year, Hope's Brian Morehouse will be on the sidelines in Boston, Mass. Saturday (April 1)  as part of the coaching staff at the WBCA Night of All-stars. The nation's top women's basketball players will be participating in the game which is part of the national convention of the Women's Basketball Coaches of America and the NCAA Division I Final Four tournament.

Morehouse and the national winners from the other NCAA and NAIA divisions will be honored at the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Coach of the Year Luncheon presented by AstraZeneca on Tuesday, April 4. 

Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as an amateur sport for women and girls.

Flying Dutch Are
National Basketball Champions

On Saturday afternoon, March 18th, in front of a sellout crowd at Springfield College's Blake Arena, the Hope College Flying Dutch captured the 2006 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament Championship, defeating the Huskies from the University of Southern Maine, 69-56.

It is the second NCAA Division III Women's Basketball title in Hope's program history, as the Flying Dutch last won in 1990, but first under 10-year head coach Brian Morehouse. In winning the NCAA crown, Hope ran off an impressive 30-game winning streak while posting a school-record 33 wins on the campaign, as the Flying Dutch snapped Southern Maine's 24-game winning streak. 

Coach Morehouse, in the post-game press conference said, "Springfield College has been an extremely tremendous host,...I could not imagine more of a well-run tournament."  He later added about the game, "All I had to do was push a couple of buttons and the players did all of the hard work.  I love my players, I love my coaches, and this season has been a great journey."

Brian Morehouse Named
National Coach of the Year

Women's basketball coach Brian Morehouse, who this weekend is
taking his squad to the final four of the NCAA championships, has been named the Division III national coach of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association of America.

The announcement was made at a banquet Thursday night for the competing teams at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Under coach Brian Morehouse the Flying Dutch over the past decade have won 20-or-more games eight consecutive seasons, claimed six MIAA championships and made five trips to the NCAA Championships, including this year's final four appearance.

Honored by d3hoops.com

Women's basketball coach Brian Morehouse has been named the Great Lakes region coach of the year by d3hoops.com. In his 10th season as coach of the Flying Dutch, Morehouse has guided this year's team to a conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Final Four.

Over the past decade the Flying Dutch are 232-51 (82%) with five appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament. In 2001-02 and again in 2002-03 Morehouse was voted the District Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and in 2001-02 the Michigan Collegiate women's basketball coach of the year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.

He entered the 2005-06 season ranked eighth among active NCAA Division III coaches by winning percentage.

Flying Dutch Swimmers
Are NCAA All-Americans

HopeCollege crowned four NCAA All-Americans at the Division III national women's swimming and diving championships this past weekend in Minneapolis, Minn.

Junior Lisa Smith (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn HS) finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (:56.04) and 7th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.50) Freshman Brittaney Reest (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (:58.34). A year Smith was the fourth place finisher in the 100-yard butterfly.

The 400-yard freestyle relay was fifth (3:31.90) with a team of freshman Laura Ansilio (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township HS), senior Lisa Ekdom (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Lisa Smith.

Student and Grad Receive
NCAA Scholarships

March 13, 2006

A current Hope College student and a recent graduate have both received awards from the NCAA to conduct graduate work in athletic training.

Senior Kelsey Guisbert of Farmington (far left) and 2005 graduate Emily Schlitz of Potterville have both been awarded NCAA Women's Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarships for Careers in Athletics.

Only 16 of the awards were made nationwide, including 13 through the program in general and three designated specifically for graduates of Division III schools, a category that includes Hope. Scholarship recipients must have been accepted into a sports administration or related program that will help the applicant obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics, such as athletics administrator, coach or athletic trainer. The awards will provide $6,000 in support during the 2006-07 school year.

Guisbert and Schlitz, athletic training majors at Hope, each intend to work at the collegiate level when finished with their graduate work.

Bria Ebels Receives All-Region Basketball Honors

Hope College senior Bria Ebels of Holland, Mich. (Holland HS) has been named to the all-region team by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

She becomes a candidate for the 2006 Kodak/WBCA Division III All-America basketball team.

This season Ebels was voted the co-most valuable player in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and was named the league's defensive player of the year.

Club Hockey Team
Finishes Fifth at Nationals

The Flying Dutchmen captured fifth place in the 16-team American Collegiate Hockey Association tournament by defeating host Florida Gulf Coast University 3-2 on Saturday. Seeded 10th entering the tournament, the Flying Dutchmen won three of their four games and finished the season with a 24-8-2 record.

Making their fifth straight trip to the national tournament, the Dutchmen have now finished second (2003), fourth (2005) and fifth three times (2002, 2004 and 2006).

Hope Qualifies Five
Swimmers to Men's Nationals

Hope College has qualified five swimmers for the NCAA Division III men's championships to be held March 16-18 in Minneapolis, Minn.Coach John Patnott's Dutchmen will compete in three individual events and four relays.

Senior freestyle Kurtis Blohm of  Wilmington, Ohio (Wilmington HS) will compete in the 50, 100 and 200 events.  He is seeded fifth in the 50 (:20.67), 4th in the 100 (:45.38) and 10th in the 200 (1:40.98).  Blohm, voted the most valuable swimmer in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for a second consecutive year, was the national silver medalist in the 50 freestyle a year ago.  He finished 11th in the 100 freestyle.

Hope's other qualifiers will compete in three relays.  The swimmers are junior Jacob Holton of Chelsea (Chelsea HS), sophomore Charles VanderBroek of Holland (Holland HS), sophomore Ryan Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS), and senior Jeff Vroegindewey of Kalamazoo (Portage Central HS).

Jorge Capestany Receives
Regional USPTA Honor

February 28, 2006

Jorge Capestany, manager of the DeWitt Tennis Center at Hope College, has been named winner of the "Facility Manager of the Year" award presented by the Midwest Division of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).

He will receive the award during the division's annual conference, running Saturday-Monday, March 4-6, in Columbus, Ohio. As the Midwest division's winner, he is also automatically nominated for the national "Facility Manager of the Year" award, which will be announced during the USPTA national convention in Las Vegas, Nev., in September.

The award recognizes a general manager of a country club, commercial tennis facility, public tennis center, resort or similar facility. It is based on encouraging professional development of facility staff; promotion of tennis in the facility environment; support for USPTA education and professional development opportunities; hiring and supporting USPTA-certified tennis professionals; and organizational affiliations and special achievements in the tennis facility industry.

Tom Renner Named "Paul Harris Fellow"

January 24, 2006

Tom Renner of the Hope College public relations office attended the Thursday, Jan. 19, meeting of the Holland Rotary Club thinking that he'd been invited as a guest in celebration of his birthday.

That was only partially true. He was actually there to receive a present: recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Renner was selected for and presented the award by Rotary member Jerry Redeker, a long-time friend, "for service and humanitarian efforts in the Holland community and for Hope College." The citation, accompanied by a pin and medallion, further notes that the award is given "in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world."

DeVos Fieldhouse Spaces
to Honor Four Hope Couples

December 18, 2005

Hope College is recognizing four couples who have played significant roles in the life of the college by naming portions of the new Richard and Helen DeVos Fieldhouse in their honor.

Russ and Doris DeVette, Bob and Marcia DeYoung, Ray and Sue Smith, and Glenn and Jackie Van Wieren are all being honored for their decades-long service to Hope. Bronze plaques commemorating the recognition will be unveiled as part of the pre-game activities for the Hope men's basketball game being played beginning at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, as part of the Russ DeVette Holiday Tournament.

"These are four very special couples who have had an extraordinary impact on the Hope and Holland communities with their career-long commitments," said Dr. James E. Bultman, president of Hope College. "We honor them as couples because each in their own special way has been a team that has had a profound impact on generations of Hope students."

After playing at the Holland Civic Center for more than 50 years, Hope moves to the its new DeVos Fieldhouse and will host Calvin there on January 14, 2006.   The storied rivalry between the two MIAA and NCAA Division III foes takes on a new national scope this season with a live game broadcast by CSTV: College Sports Television.  CSTV, the nation's number one destination for college sports, is easily accessible on cable systems around the country and on satellite via Dish Network (Channel 152), DirecTV (Channel 610). 

In Grand Rapids, PBS affiliate WGVU-TV will originate the game.  In past years, the schools have worked with WGVU to provide an analog satellite signal of the game for organized remote viewing parties sponsored by Calvin and Hope alumni.  The gatherings have drawn over 2,500 alumni nationwide from the two schools.

"WGVU has been a great partner for us for many years now," says Tom Renner, the public relations director for Hope College.  "We have been thrilled with their commitment to what we consider the best rivalry in Division III basketball."

Two Soccer Players
Named All-Americans

December 8, 2005

Two members of the league championship Hope College men's soccer team have been named NCAA Division III All-Americans.

Senior forward Geoff Meyer of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) is a first-team honoree while senior midfielder Devin McNeil of Lansing (DeWitt HS) is a second-team selection.

The All-America program is administered by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).  The program is supported by adidas.

Soccer Teams Headed to
NCAA Championships

November 8, 2005

MIAA championship seasons are being rewarded for the Hope College soccer teams as both will compete in the NCAA Division III tournament beginning this weekend.

In the men's tournament, the Flying Dutchmen (17-3) will play Gustavus-Adolphus, Minn. (12-2-3) at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater on Friday at 1:30 p.m. CT in a first round match. In another Friday match, host Whitewater (14-2-1) will play Wheaton (15-5-1) beginning at 11 a.m. CT. The winners will meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.

Competing in the women's tournament for a third consecutive year, the Flying Dutch (18-2) will travel to Granville, Ohio for a first round game against DePauw, Ind. at 5 p.m. ET Friday. In another Friday first round game, host Denison (14-3-3) will play Frostburg State, Md. (11-5-3) at 7:30 p.m. ET. Friday's winners will meet on Saturday night (6 p.m.) in Granville.

Flying Dutchmen Are
MIAA Men's Golf Champions

The Flying Dutchmen have won the MIAA championship in men's golf for the third consecutive year and for the sixth time in seven years.

Coach Bob Ebels' Dutchmen culminated what is becoming a come-from-behind trademark to win the league crown by 22 strokes over eight tournaments. Runnerup Tri-State owned a nine-stroke after six tournaments, but Hope rallied over the final two outings to claim the 12th league championship in school history.

The team set MIAA records at two tournaments and their seasonal average of 296 strokes per round is an alltime conference mark.

ESPN Says Hope-Calvin
Rivalry Among the Best

ESPN today highlighted the nation's greatest college basketball rivalries and to no one's surprise, the Hope-Calvin rivalry is tops in NCAA Division III and was ranked fourth in all collegiate hoops. The ranking was based on a poll of fans last season and ESPN's so-called "panel of experts". Here it is:

#1 - Duke vs. North Carolina
#2 - Connecticut vs. Tennessee (women)
#3 - Louisville vs. Kentucky
#4 - HOPE vs. CALVIN
#5 - Xavier vs. Cincinnati
#6 - Indiana vs. Purdue

An ESPN crew covered the Calvin at Hope game last February. ESPN also conducted an on-line "Fan Poll" where the Hope-Calvin rivalry received resounding support as America's best with more than 80% of the voters casting their ballot for the orange & blue/maroon & gold.

Football Cheerleaders Win Honors

The Hope Cheerleaders attended the largest regional college cheerleading camp in the country sponsored by Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA). Hundreds of cheerleaders from colleges and universities all over the Midwest met at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois for four days in August.

In addition to learning new skills and coming together as a squad at the beginning of the season, the Hope squad competed in three competitions while at camp in the Small Coed Division which included teams such as Butler Univ. and Notre Dame. Despite half of the twelve members of Hope’s squad being new to college cheerleading, Hope earned a first place trophy in the Cheer competition and second place trophies in the Sideline and Fight Song competitions, according to coach Wes Wooley.
