The second annual Hope College HOPEYs award ceremony was held Monday, April 16 at DeVos Fieldhouse. The HOPEYs were an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Hope's student-athletes. The recipients were determined in a vote of student-athletes based on nominations.
The Winners

EXCEPTIONAL GAME
Men’s Soccer vs. Dominican-- In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Hope defeated Dominican 2-1 with the winning goal coming from an unassisted corner kick goal by Jason Muller with 19 seconds left in the game.

EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE IN AN INDIVIDUAL EVENT
Sheri McCormack - Women’s Cross Country -- Sheri came in fourth place in the NCAA Great Lakes Region in Cross Country which helped her to win All-Region honors as well as Academic All-American honors.

OUTSTANDING TEAM
Men’s Basketball -- Won both the MIAA conference championship and the MIAA tournament, ranked #1 in Division III Basketball for the majority of the season, finished with a record of 14-0 in regular season conference games.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
David Krombeen – Men’s Basketball -- Received MIAA MVP award, ranks 2nd on the all-time list at Hope for assists and steals, averaged 15.1 ppg, surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Greer Bratschie – Volleyball - Finished the season 2nd in the MIAA with assists, averaging 10.2 apg, earned All-MIAA 1st team and All-Region honors. She was also a captain of this year’s volleyball team that made it to the NCAA tournament for the 4th straight year.

MIAA CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE
Men’s Basketball -- Began as the preseason favorite to win the MIAA and ended the season undefeated in MIAA play. Won both the MIAA conference championship and the MIAA tournament championship to gain an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the seventh consecutive season.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
Jenna Grasmeyer – Volleyball -- During her freshman season, Jenna was a two-time MIAA player of the week, received MIAA Freshman of the Year award and was named the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the year. She also was an All-MIAA 1st team member, and led the team and was 2nd in the league in kills/game.

BEST CLUTCH PERFORMANCE
Nate Snuggerud – Men’s Basketball -- During the first round of the NCAA tournament, Nate scored 37 points, helping secure the win to get them to the next round. The following night, Nate topped his 37-point performance by scoring 40 points against Illinois Wesleyan, which was the first 40 point performance by a Hope player in an NCAA tournament game.

BEST BREAKTHROUGH ATHLETE
Shawn Jackson – Football -- After limited playing time during his freshman season, Shawn was the leading scorer in the MIAA and finished the season 2nd in the conference in rushing yards.

BEST BREAKTHROUGH TEAM
Football -- In the 2010 season, the team finished with a 3-7 record. This past season, they improved to a 7-3 record, which was Hope’s best mark since 2001, and finished 2nd in the MIAA.

BEST RECORD-BREAKING PERFORMANCE
Joel Rietsma – Track -- Broke the school record in the 800-meter run by a full second with the time of 1:50.68 at the Emory Invitational. The previous record was established in 2001.

ROLE-PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Nate King – Men’s Basketball -- Nate is a celebrated servant leader. As a senior captain, Nate's love for his team and fellow players is paramount to the success of the men's basketball program. A four-year player on varsity, Nate has been the emotional leader and motivator of the team. He has clearly put himself in a position respected by teammates and coaches as he works tirelessly to be sure that games appear easy compared to practice.
