Prague Baseball Week
A HISTORY
Provided by Jan Bagin, Executive Director of PBW
In 2006 we celebrated 25th anniversary of the Prague Baseball Week (PBW) tournament
and I believe that PBW illustrates a successful story of game development in
Europe. Over the years
PBW has become one of the best tournaments in Europe.
History
The Kovo Praha club founded PBW in 1980 and the main purpose of the event at that time was to promote baseball in Czechoslovakia. The original format was just series of exhibition games, without final standings of the teams after the event. The
tournament was held every second year. The first real tournament format was introduced in 1984 and first PBW winner became team All Stars from Holland (The Netherlands). Mostly teams from Holland represented international baseball in first decade of the tournament.
Other participants were Czech local clubs.
The Democratic Czech Velvet Revolution at 1989 brought wide opportunities and challenges for Czech baseball. Massive successful development of the PBW is dated in two stages. First in 1992, when club Sokol Krc assumed the role of
tournament organizer and second in 1995 when the first part of a new baseball complex was opened.
Teams
Teams from all around the world have participated in PBW. This includes teams from Australia, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Italy, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine,
Sweden and the USA. European countries are represented by their National teams. The United States has been represented by college teams and allstar teams comprised of college players. An NAIA allstar team
has won the last two championships.
Winners
Teams from the Netherlands and United States have each won the tournament seven times. The Czech Republic with two titles while Australia and Italy each have one.
Organizers
Volunteers from club Krc Altron (former Sokol Krc) organize the tournament. Three people are key persons in organizing event. Jan Bagin is the tournament director. His brother Daniel takes care of the facility and sponsorship. Gabriel Waage is responsible for promotions and organizes the volunteer staff.
Jan Begin is in charge of getting the teams, scheduling and all baseball operations.
Fields
During the first decade, teams played on soccer fields. The playing cnditions were slightly improved by building an infield on the side of soccer field, which was used then as outfield only.
A huge step occurred in 1985 with the construction of the first original baseball filed in our complex in 1995. Finally baseball was introduced in its own facility.
The facility has been improved annually and now includes two major league size fields, three little league fields, a clubhouse with eight locker rooms, restaurant, baseball shop and club office.
In 2000 the organizers opened a gymnasium and in 2001 one of big fields and one little league field was lighted. All of the fields are equipped with automatic water irrigation system.
Attendance
The tournament attendnace has grown from just a few people (mostly players) watching the first year's tournament to several thousand
in recent years.
Media
At the beginning, PBW did not attract wide media attention. Baseball was recognized as an American (means unfavorable) sport in a communist country.
Development of the tournament from 1992 and baseball facility opening in 1995 has resulted in dramatic changes in media coverage.
Every year since 1991, Czech national TV will televise two or three games live. Two radio stations and two newspapers and one sports magazine also cover the tournament.
Supporting Events
The motto of PBW is "Every day one extra inning." The tournament sponsors a homerun derby, celebrities' game, ticket raffle, disabled kids softball game, etc.
