2010-11 Season in Review

Will Bowser Named to Academic Honors Team (4/27/11)
Senior standout Will Bowser of Midland (HH Dow HS) has been named to the Academic/Athletic Honors team of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. Co-captain of this year's MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen team, Bowser was an all-conference and all-region honoree as he led Hope to a berth in the NCAA Division III championships.

He averaged 18.7 points ansd 5.1 rebounds a game en route to becoming the 34th player in Hope men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 career points (1,240).

An accounting major, Bowser has a 3.4 grade point average. He has served in several community-oriented initiatives, including Habitat for Humanity, a volunteer at Holland's City Mission and as a participant in an elementary school reading program.

Other members of the honor team are D.J. Baisen of Spring Arbor University, Reggie Hamilton of Oakland University, Zach Novak of the University of Michigan, and Joe Prepolec of Kalamazoo College.

Hope the Leader Again in Men's Basketball Attendance (4/26/11)
For the ninth straight year, Hope College has led all NCAA Division III men's basketball programs in home attendance. This is the 13th time in school history that Hope has been the men's basketball attendance leader. The 2010-11 Flying Dutchmen averaged 2,818 fans per game over 14 home dates. The College of Wooster, Ohio ranked second with an average of 2,016 fans over 19 home dates while rival Calvin finished third with an average of 1,792 over 13 home dates.

The Flying Dutchmen posted an 11-3 home floor record in 2010-11. In six seasons at DeVos Fieldhouse, Hope has posted an 85-11 record. The Flying Dutchmen were champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), competed in the NCAA Division III tournament and posted a 23-7 overall record under first-year coach Matt Neil.

Other years when Hope led the nation in men's attendance were 1984, 1991, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

The average home attendance for the 402 Division III men's teams in 2010-11 was 405 fans.

Basketball Players Receive All-Region Honors (3/15/11)
Hope senior basketball players Will Bowser (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) and Carrie Snikkers (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) have received All-Region honors. Both been been named to the All-Great Lakes Region team by the website d3hoops.com and Bowser has received first team recognition on the Great Lakes Region team of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Both players led their respective teams to the championship of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. Snikkers is All-Region first team honoree for the three consecutive years.

Season Ends With Overtime Loss (3/5/11)

An amazing season came to an end for the Flying Dutchmen who were defeated in overtime by Augustana, 88-80, on Saturday. Coach Mat Neil's MIAA champion Dutchmen finish the season with a 23-7 record.

After trailing by 10 points at halftime, 40-30, the Flying Dutchmen fought back as they have on so many occasions to go ahead 70-68 with 2:45 remaining in regulation. The Dutchmen were stymmied in their attempts to make it a two-possession game in the final minute of regulation as free throws did not fall. Augustana forced overtime with a three-pointerwith five second remaining. The home team never trailed in overtime.

Senior Will Bowser ended his collegiate czareer with a 29-point performance. Logan Neil added 14 points off the bench while David Krombeen scored 11.

Flying Dutchmen Win Tournament Opener (3/4/11)

The Flying Dutchmen held on to win their first round game for the first time in three years edging Hanover, Ind. 73-70 Friday at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. Coach Mat Neil's Dutcxhmen advance to Saturday's second round against host Augustana in a game tipping off at 8 p.m. ET. Augustana won its NCAA opener over Webster, Mo., 76-51. Playing their 50th NCAA game, the Flying Dutchmen improved to 23-6 on the season.

Hope led 38-27 at halftime and by as many as 13 points in the second half, by Hanover made a late charge to come within two points, 70-68, with seven seconds remaining. With two seconds remaining David Krombeen hit the back end of two free throws to give Hope a three-point margin. A buzzer-beating three-point attempt by Hanover was shy.

Will Bowser led the Dutchmen with 20 points while Ty Tanis added 18. Hope took care of the ball with only nine turnovers in the game.

MIAA Honors Hope Players
All-conference honors have been presented to two Hope players for their MIAA championship seasons. Senior Will Bowser (Midland/Dow HS) is a first team honoree while junior David Krombeen (Grandville/Grandville HS) received second team recognition.

Flying Dutchmen Headed to Illinois for Opening Weekend

The MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen are headed to Illinois for a first round game in the 61-team NCAA Division III men's basketball championships. The first and second round games will be played at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. The team will be appearing in the NCAA Division III championships for the 22nd time in school history and Friday's game will be the 50th alltime in the playoffs. continue

Flying Dutchmen Headed to NCAA Tournament (2/26/11)

The Flying Dutchmen won the MIAA Tournament on Saturday with a 72-67 win over rival Calvin before a sold out DeVos Fieldhouse crowd. This is the fourth consecutive year that Hope has won the tournament, which earns them an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. With this win, Hope moves their all-time record against Calvin to 92-88. Hope's first opponent in the NCAA playoffs will be determined Monday.

As the rivalry games have always been, Saturday's contest was tightly fought. Hope established the upperhand early-on, building an 11-point lead in the first five minutes. While Calvin threatened to come back, Hope never relinquished the lead. In the second half they boosted their lead to 16, though Calvin closed to three points. In the end, however, coach Matt Neil's Flying Dutchmen maintained their lead to win the game.

Coach Matt will be making the NCAA Tournament in his first year as coach of the Flying Dutchmen.

Leading the Flying Dutchmen in scoring was senior Will Bowser with 23 points. Senior Ty Tanis added 17 points as he shot 5-7 from three-point range, and sophomore Colton Overway scored 11.

Rivalry Showdown Coming in MIAA Tournament Finals (2/25/11)

The Flying Dutchmen assured themselves of a familiar position in the MIAA tournament as they posted a 63-45 semi-final win over Adrian on Friday night before a capacity DeVos Fieldhouse crowd (3,205). The win puts Hope in the title game Saturday against rival Calvin with the winner advancing to the NCAA playoffs.

Hope and Calvin split their conference games this year. Saturday's game will be the 179th meeting of the teams in this storied rivalry.

Friday's game started out a defensive battle, as both teams struggled for every basket. The score at halftime was 21-15 in Hope's favor, which marked the lowest halftime score in the DeVos Fieldhouse, both by Hope and their opponent. Key baskets in the second half from senior Adam Dickerson and sophomore Nate Snuggerud ensured that Hope would progress in the tournament, as they marked a 16-2 run to make the score 49-25. Hope also capitalized on their strong defense, as they scored 22 points off of Adrian turnovers.

The Dutchmen were led by Snuggerud with 15 points, including 13 in the second half. Other key contributors were junior David Krombeen (10 points, 6 assists, 5 steals) and senior Adam Dickerson (8 points).

Flying Dutchmen Win Big in MIAA Tournament Opener (2/23/11)

The MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen put an exclamation point on its opening tournament statement by routing visiting Alma 110-77 Wednesday in a first round game. The victory advances coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen to Friday's semi-game game to be played at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse against Adrian, a double overtime victor over Olivet in another first round game.

The win was Hope's 20th of the season (20-6) marking the sixth year in-a-row that the Dutchmen have counted 20-or-more victories. Hope won its opening game in this NCAA qualifying tournament for a 17th coinsecutive time.

Senior Ty Tanis set the tone early scoring Hope's first eight points. The Flying Dutchmen shot 61% in the first half in gaining a 58-32 advantage. Much of the game's success can be attributed to the tenacious rebounding of the Flying Dutchmen, as they grabbed 44 boards compared to Alma's 21.

The Flying Dutchmen were led in scoring by sophomore Nate Snuggerud, who scored 19 and also collected 10 rebounds, making this game his fifth double-double of the season. Other scoring efforts came from senior Ty Tanis (16), senior Will Bowser (15), junior Nate King (11), and sophomore Colton Overway (10). Also impressive was the fact that all 13 players who appeared in tonight's game for Hope entered the scorebook.

MIAA Champion Flying Dutchmen Score Victory (2/19/11)

The Flying Dutchmen closed out an MIAA championship season by topping Kalamazoo 80-73 on Saturday. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen were a perfect 7-0 in league road games. Hope enters the conference tournament next Wednesday with a 19-6 overall record. Sophomore Nate Snuggerud had a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds while Will Bowser had game-scoring honors with 23 points.

Win Streak Snapped in Overtime by Albion (2/16/11)

Hope's 11-game winning streak was snapped by visiting Albion 78-76 in overtime Wednesday night. The Flying Dutchmen have already clinched a league title and the home court advantage in next week's conference tournament, while Albion is still battling for position. Hope had won several league games by close margins, but it wasn't to be in this game.

Albion led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but Hope was able to cut the deficit to four points, 34-30, at halftime. Hope's first lead in the game didn't come until there was seven minutes remaining in regulation. David Krombeen's basket with 34 seconds left in regulation forced the overtime. The Dutchmen built a six-point lead early in the overtime, but they were unable to put the game away by missing five-of-six free throws down the stretch. The game-winner was scored with two seconds remaining by Albion's Kolin Kazen on a coast-to-coast layup.

The game was dominated by fouls, as the teams combined for 61 personal fouls and went to the free throw line 67 times. Hope was led by senior captain Will Bowser with 20 points while David Krombeen added 17 and Colton Overway 11. The Dutchmen will travel to Kalamazoo for their last regular season game before hosting the MIAA tournament next week.

Road Victory Extends Hope Winning Streak to 11 In-a-Row (2/12/11)

The MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen extended their winning streak to 11 in-a-row by edging host Adrian 59-55 on Saturday. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen are undefeated in Saturday games, including a string of six in-a-row against MIAA opponents. Heading into the final week of the regular season the Flying Dutchmen are 11-1 in league games and 18-5 overall.

Adrian gained an early lead (10-3), but the Flying Dutchmen fought back to take their first lead, 18-16, with seven minutes left in the first half. The teams were tied four times before the Bulldogs gained a one-point halftime advantage, 25-24. Hope went on a 15-2 run to gain a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining. The Flying Dutchmen would never relinquish the lead, but Adrian was within two points, 57-55, with 1:42 to go. Two free throws by Hope's Ty Tanis with 10 seconds remaining clinched the outcome.

Tanis had a game-high 16 points while Will Bowser totaled 13. Nate Snuggerud just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Flying Dutchmen had two fewer baskets than Adrian, but the Flying Dutchmen were 23-for-27 on free throws compared to the loser's 13-for-17.

Flying Dutchmen are MIAA Champions! (2/9/11)

The Flying Dutchmen put an exclamation point on an amazing season by clinching the MIAA championship behind a 65-60 victory over Olivet Wednesday and taking advantage of some key losses by the last of the contenders. With a 10-1 league record, the Flying Dutchmen have a four-game lead over the field with three games remaining to be played. As champions, the Flying Dutchmen are also assured of the home court advantage when the league tournament begins in two weeks.

The championship, Hope's 35th alltime, comes in the first year of coach Mett Neil. The team's tenth straight win puts the Flying Dutchmen at 17-5 overall.

The game featured the MIAA's players of the week - Will Bowser, from Hope, and Michael McClary, from Olivet - as the Dutchmen sought to strengthen their chances at hosting the MIAA tournament while Olivet fought to keep their chances alive. In the end, the deciding factor of the game was defense, as both Hope and Olivet made substantial efforts on their side of the floor. The Dutchmen fought to a two-point lead at halftime, 41-39, with the help of junior Logan Neil, who scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half. This lead would not be enough, however, as Olivet behind McClary, continued to play competitively throughout the second half. Two late free throws and a last second block from sophomore Colton Overway (six points) clinched the victory.

Besides leading scorer Neil, the Dutchmen found support from junior David Krombeen (12 points), sophomore Nate Snuggerud (10 points), and senior Adam Dickerson (10 points).

Flying Dutchmen Expand Lead in MIAA Race (2/5/11)

Hope's amazing run toward an MIAA championship continued Saturday as the Flying Dutchmen won on the road for the fifth consecutive Saturday while the contenders were being defeated. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen topped Alma 85-71 to improve to 9-1 in the MIAA race. Every other team in the league has at least four losses. Rival Calvin joined that group by losing on the road to Olivet, 71-69.

Hope's ninth straight victory moved the Flying Dutch to 16-5 overall. After a 2-4 season start the Flying Dutchmen have won 14-of-15 games.

Five Hope players scored in double figures led by Will Bowser's 24 points. Logan Neil added 15 points off the bench followed by David Krombeen and Ty Tanis, 13 apiece, and Colton Overway 12.

Hope led 40-39 at halftime. Trailing 61-59 midway through the second half, Ty Tanis' three-pointer put Hope ahead to stay. Hope outscored the host Scots 23-5 over the next eight minutes to lock up the win.

Flying Dutchmen Extend Winning Streak (2/3/11)

The MIAA-leading Flying Dutchmen extended their winning streak to eight games by topping visiting Trine 81-64 on Thursday. In what turned out to be a fast-paced game, the Flying Dutchmen maintained their two-game league lead with an 8-1 mark in conference games and 15-5 overall.

Hope was led by senior Will Bowser who ended with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The game became a physical match early on as Hope dominated the boards, posting 50 rebounds compared to Trine's 32. The Flying Dutchmen were particularly stalwart on their end of the basket, allowing Trine just four offensive rebounds in the entire game. On the scoring end, the Dutchmen distributed the ball well, resulting in four players joining Bowser in double-digit scoring -- Ty Tanis 16, Nate Snuggerud 12, David Krombeen and Chris Ray 11 each.

Flying Dutchmen Make Amazing Comeback to Defeat Rival Calvin (1/29/11)

Trailing by as many as 18 points late in the first half, the MIAA-leading Flying Dutchmen rallied to defeat rival Calvin 76-70 before a stunned, capacity crowd at the Calvin's Van Noord Arena. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen expand their lead in the MIAA standings to two games.

The Flying Dutchmen avenged an earlier 14-point loss to Calvin and with their seventh straight win expanded Hope's lead in the alltime series with Calvin to four games (91-87).

Junior David Krombeen scored a career-high 23 points, including 21 in the second half. Will Bowser had 17 points in the first half, but the Flying Dutchmen trailed at halftime, 42-29. He finished with 26 points.

Flying Dutchmen Win Shootout Behind Bowser's 46 Points (1/26/11)

In a wild record-breaking shootout at DeVos Fieldhouse Wednesday night, the MIAA-leading Flying Dutchmn posted a 100-95 overtime victory over Kalamazoo. Midway through the conference season coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen (6-1) have a one-game lead over Adrian and rival Calvin (5-2). Hope is 13-5 overall.

The game was highlighted by an outstanding performance by senior Will Bowser who scored a fieldhouse record 46 points. It is the most points scored by a Hope player in a home game and the second highest in school history behind only Dan Shinabarger who scored 51 points at Albion in 1970. Bowser also achieved a career milestone as he became the 32nd Hope player in men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 points (now at 1,015).

A hot-shooting Kalamazoo team grabbed a 16-point first half lead and led 49-41 at halftime. The Flying Dutchmen scored the first nine points of the second half. Hope led by as many as nine points in the second half, but couldn't contain the Hornets who battled back to tie the score 85-85 forcing the first overtime game in the six-year-old DeVos Fieldhouse. Bowser scored eight of Hope's 15 points in overtime.

Kalamazoo also had a standout offensive effort from junior center Joe Prepolec who scored 40 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Other Hope players scoring in double figures were Nate Snuggerud with 16 points andf Colton Overway added 11.

The Flying Dutchmen begin the second half of the conference campaign at Calvin on Saturday. The Knights are the only MIAA team to have beaten Hope this season.

Flying Dutchmen Gain Sole Possession of MIAA Lead (1/22/11)

Winning their fifth straight game, the Flying Dutchmen have moved into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings after defeating host Albion 66-55 on Saturday. Coach Matt Neil's Flying Dutchmen improved to 5-1 in the MIAA and 12-5 overall.

Winning for the third time on the road against a league opponent, the Flying Dutchmen overcame a one-point deficit with solid defense that limited Albion to only six baskets and 24% shooting over the last 20 minutes. Trailing by a point, 38-37, four minutes into the half, the Flying Dutchmen scored seven unanswered points to take command. Hope led by as many as 18 points.

Senior Will Bowser led Hope with 21 points, including 16 in the second half. He also grabbed nine rebounds and has three steals, two assists and a blocked shot. David Krombeen was the only other Hope player in double figures with 10 points.

The Flying Dutchmen shot 50% in the game with 11 more baskets than Albion. The Britons were sent to the free throw line 32 times compared to just 13 by Hope.

Flying Dutchmen Win top Remain in First in MIAA Race (1/19/11)

The Flying Dutchmen maintained their first place stride topping visiting Adrian 70-63 Wednesday night. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen share first place in the MIAA standings with Albion at 4-1. On Saturday there will be only one team on top of the standings as Hope is scheduled to play at Albion.

The Flying Dutchmen relied on runs to gain their 11th victory of the season. Trailing 14-6 six minutes into the game, the Flying Dutchmen went on a 14-point run to go ahead 20-14. Adrian fought back to tie the score, 22-22, and was able to build the lead to 35-31 at halftime. The teams were tied 41-41 six minutes into the second half when the Flying Dutchmen went on another 14-point run to gain a 55-41 advantage with 8:11 to go in the game. Hope never looked back, leading by as many as 14 points.

Four Hope players finished in double figures led by Will Bowser whose 8-for-11 shooting resulted in 19 points. Sophomore Colton Overway scored a career-high 14 points while Nate Snuggerud had 13 and Logan Neil 10.

Flying Dutchmen Stay in Heat of MIAA Race (1/15/11)

The Flying Dutchmen posted their third straight conference victory with a come-from-behind win at Olivet on Saturday, 77-71. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen improve to 3-1 in the MIAA and with their eighth win in the last nine games are 10-5 overall.

Trailing by four points at halftime (36-32) and by as many as 10 points midway through the second half, 47-37, the Flying Dutchmen went on a 12-2 run to tie the game, 49-49. The game would be tied six more times (13 times overall), before Hope gained the lead for good when Ty Tanis made a pair of free throws, 65-63 with 5:06 to go. Olivet was only a point behind, 69-68 at 2:08, when Tanis buried a three-pointer. Hope's last five points came on clutch free throws.

Will Bowser led the Flying Dutchmen with 18 points while Tanis and Logan Neil each scored 13 and David Krombeen added 11.

Flying Dutchmen Move Into Tie for First in MIAA (1/12/11)

The Flying Dutchmen moved into a tie for first place in the MIAA race by routing visiting Alma 89-58 Wednesday before more than 2,600 DeVos Fieldehouse fans. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen are part of a four-way tie for first place in the MIAA race with a 2-1 conference mark. Hope is 9-5 overall.

Trailing 22-21 midway through the first half, the Flying Dutchmen reeled off nine straight points to take the lead for good. Hope led 40-34 at halftime. Alma went without a basket the final seven minutes of the game as Hope pulled away.

Balanced scoring was again a Hope trademark as four players scored in double figures led by Will Bowser with 24. Nate Snuggerud finished with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds while Ty Tanis added 12 points and Adam Dickerson 10.

Hope dominated the boards with a 51-28 rebound advantage and committed just nine turnovers in the game.

Flying Dutchmen Gain First MIAA Win on the Road (1/8/11)

Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen join a tightly contested league race that after just one week has only one undefeated team (Albion, 2-0). At 1-1 in league games, Hope is part of a six-way tie for second place. Hope improved to 8-5 overall.

Trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Flying Dutchmen were able to overcome 10 Trine three-pointers to gain a slim 45-44 halftime advantage. Trailing by a point, 82-81, the Flying Dutchmen got the lead for good on Logan Neil's three-pointer at 1:21. Seven free throws in the closing seconds sealed the verdict. Hope was 21-for-25 in free throws for the game.

Six Hope players scored in double figures led by Will Bowser's 25. Neil added 15 points while David Krombeen had his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ty Tanis and Nate Snuggerud each scored 12 points while Chris Ray added 10.

Rival Calvin Dominates Dutchmen at DeVos (1/5/11)

A relentness outside shooting attack and total domination of the boards by rival Calvin doom the Flying Dutchmen who were defeated by the visiting Knights 95-81 before a soldout DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 3,653 fans Wednesday night. The Knights closed the gap in the alltime series to three games over the 177 played to date. The loss snapped Hope's five-game winning streak and put coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen at 7-5 on the season. It was the MIAA opener for the teams.

The winning Knights shot 11-for-16 from outside the three-point arch, but the telling statistic was the winner's 46-21 rebound advantage.

Senior Ty Tanis scored a career-high 24 points for the Dutchmen while Will Bowser added 16 and Natt Snuggerud 10. David Krombeen had seven assists and five steals.

Flying Dutchmen Win DeVette Holiday Title (12/30/10)

The Flying Dutchmen seized the momentum late in the game en route to winning their own Russ DeVette Holiday Classic championship for the sixth year in-a-row on Thursday night. Playing before nearly 3,000 DeVos Fieldhouse fans, coach Matt Neil's Flying Dutchmen edged Malone, Ohio 86-80 for their fifth straight victory.

Trailing by three points, 60-57, midway through the second half, the Flying Dutchmen went on a seven-point run to take command of the game. Up to that point the teams had been tied 12 times and traded the lead another 10 times. Hope expanded the lead to as many as 12 points, 79-67, with 2:34 left.

Junior David Krombeen was named the tournament's most valuable player. In the title game he was credited with a fieldhouse-record nine steals. He also scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and had four assists. He was one of five Hope playes to score in double figures. Senior Ty Tanis scored 15 points, 13 of them in the second half. Will Bowser followed with 13 while Nate Snuggerud and Colton Overway each scored 12. Snuggerud joined Krombeen on the all-tournament team.

Flying Dutchmen Maintain Holiday Tradition With Win (12/29/10)

The Flying Dutchmen maintained a holiday tradition by advancing to the championship game of their own Russ DeVette Holiday Classic for the 11th consecutive year by defeating Marygrove 91-68 on Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen posted their fourth consecutive victory to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Hope will play Malone, Ohio in Thursday's title game with a tipoff of 7:30 p.m. Malone defeated Madonna 74-65 in Wednesday's other game. The Flying Dutchmen will be playing in the title game for the 19th time in the 22-year history of the tournament.

Sophomore Nate Snuggerud scored a career-high 22 points behind 8-for-9 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 on free throws while junior David Krombeen added 16. Hope's bench out-scored Marygrove's subs 36-10 with Josh Holwerda and Chris Ray scoring 12 and 10 respectively.

Flying Dutchmen Win RDV Sportsplex Classic (12/22/10)

The Flying Dutchmen enter the holiday break with a three-game winning streak after capturing back-to-back wins at the RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic in Orlando, Fla. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen moved above the .500 mark (5-4) for the first time this season by routing Dominican, Ill. 86-54 on Wednesday night. In Wednesday's other game Lake Forest defeated Trine 63-51.

As with their opening 69-65 RDV victory over Lake Forest on Tuesday, the Flying Dutchmen used a stiffling defense to set the tone. Dominican was forced into 25 turnovers as the Flying Dutchmen were credited with 17 steals to raise their two-game total for thefts to 39. Hope players also blocked nine Dominican shots.

Hope never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. Ahead 20-19 midway through the first half, the Flying Dutchmen went on a 13-2 run, 33-21, and expanded it to 44-37 at halftime. In the end, all 12 Hope players who saw action got into the scoreboard and had a rebound.

Senior Will Bowser was named the tournament's most valuable player and was joined on the all-tournament team by senior Ty Tanis. Bowser scored 17 points against Dominican after scoring a career-high 22 the night before. Tanis had back-to-back double figure scoring performances in the tournament, including 10 against Dominican. Also scoring in double figures were Josh Holwerda with a career-best 11 and David Krombeen with 10 to go along with six steals.

The Flying Dutchmen, who have played just two of their first eight games at home, play their next three at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse beginning with the Russ DeVette Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29-30 and then the MIAA opener against rival Calvin on Jan. 5.

Flying Dutchmen Rally for Victory in Florida (12/21/10)

The Flying Dutchmen rallied from a second half double-figure deficit to post a 69-65 victory over Lake Forest, Ill. at the RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic in Orlando, Fla. on Tuesday night. It was a good night for MIAA teams as Trine defeated Dominican, Ill. 84-73 in Tuesday's other game.

For the first time this season the Flying Dutchmen, under first-year coach Matt Neil, are at the .500 mark (4-4).

The tournament continues Wednesday with Trine (8-2) playing Lake Forest (3-5) at 5:30 p.m., followed by Hope against Dominican (6-5).

The Flying Dutchmen trailed at halftime, 40-36, and by as many as 12 points three minutes into the second half. Behind a tenacious defense, highlighted by 22 steals, the Flying Dutchmen battled back to tie the score at 65-65 with 2:18 remaining. It marked the 11th time that the game was tied. Neither team could score in three possession exchanges. Sophomore Nate Snuggerud gained a key steal with 21 seconds remaining. Teammate Will Bowser was fouled and he cooly sank a pair of charities to raise his game-high scoring total to 22 points. Another Lake Forest turnover, this one with 10 seconds left, resulted in Logan Neil going to the free throw. He sank a pair to seal the verdict.

Also scoring in double figures were David Krombeen and Adam Dickerson with 12 and 10 points respectively. Eight Hope players were credited with a steal, led by Colton Overway with five. Lake Forest had one more basket than Hope, including an 11-2 advantage in three-pointers, but the Flying Dutchmen were successful on 21-of-28 free throws compared to the losers' 6-of-9.

Flying Dutchmen Bounce Back for Victory (12/11/10)
Grace Bible 93, Hope 90 / Hope 104, Purdue-NC 78

Saturday: For the third consecutive weekend, the Flying Dutchmen bounced back from a loss to post a convincing victory. On Saturday it was in the consolation game of Hope's own Holland Sentinel Community Tournament. After suffering a tough three-point loss to Grace Bible on Friday, the Flying Dutchmen coasted to a 104-78 win over Purdue-North Central on a day in which the Hope/Holland basketball community celebrated the coaching career of Glenn Van Wieren.

The Flying Dutchmen will enter semester exam week with a 2-4 season mark. The next action will be a holiday tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Hope never trailed in jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the first four minutes. Shooting 61% in the first half, the Flying Dutchmen had a 53-27 halftime lead. Colton Overway's jumper with 1:38 left in the game put Hope at the 100-point mark.

David Krombeen scored a career-high 22 points while Chris Ray had his first varsity double-digit rebounding performance (10). Will Bowser, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored 18 points while Adam Dickerson added 12 and Nate Snuggerud 10.

Friday: Hope's home opener was a shootout as Grace Bible of Grand Rapids edged the Flying Dutchmen 93-90. For the first time in the 11-year history of the tournament, Hope would not be playing in the championship game.

Winless against Hope is seven previous meetings, Grace Bible used an unrelenting inside game to offset Hope's deadly outside shooting. The winners outscored Hope 58-26 in the paint behind a 62% shooting clip. Hope sank a season-high 13 three-point attempts, but ended with a 44% overall shooting percentage.

Hope had a chance for a different outcome right to the very end. The game was tied 13 times and the teams exchanged the lead on 16 occasions. Neither team had a lead of more than six points. Grace Bible took the lead for good with 1:59 to play, 86-85, but Hope had its chances. Trailing 92-90, the Flying Dutchmen gained possession on a Grace Bible turnover. Hope missed a shot with seven seconds remaining and was forced to foul. Grace Bible made just one of two free throws to go ahead 93-90 and Hope had the rebound with three seconds to go. A desperation three-point shot at the buzzer would not fall.

Will Bowser led the Flying Dutchmen with 21 points, including 5-for-9 from three-point range. He was one of five Hope players to score in double figures. Others were David Krombeen 15, Logan Neil 13, Ty Tanis 11 and Nate Snuggerud 11. Game honors went to the winner's Allen Durham with 26 points, including 22 in the second half when he shot 9-for-11.

Flying Dutchmen Split Games at Challenge (12/4/10)
The Flying Dutchmen split a pair of games with CCIW rivals Carthage and Wheaton this weekend. On Friday the Dutchmen were nipped 71-70 by the host Redmen while on Saturday coach Matt Neil's squad knocked off nationally ranked Wheaton 80-74. Hope's Saturday win marked the first time in the seven-year history of the challenge between the two Division III conferences that the Flying Dutchmen were able to post a win on the court of the CCIW foes. Hope will take a 2-3 record into their first home appearance of the season when they host the Holland Sentinel Community Classic next weekend.

Saturday - Hope 80, Wheaton 74 box -- The Flying Dutchmen trailed at halftime by a point, 37-36. The teams traded the lead several times before the Flying Dutchmen went ahead to stay on David Krombeen's basket with 12 minutes left to play. When fouls started to pile up against Hope, the bench players stepped up and out-scored Wheaton 22-8. Five players scored in double figures led by Krombeen with 17 points, followed by Logan Neil 14, Will Bowser 13, Adam Dickerson 10 and Ty Tanis 10. Hope shot 55%, led by Neil's 6-for-7, and the 7-for-11 from three-point range.

Friday - Carthage 71, Hope 70 Box -- The Flying Dutchmen fought back from a halftime deficit, but were unable to hold the lead. Carthage led by as many as 15 points in the first half and by 38-32 at intermission, but the Flying Dutchmen came back to take the lead which they expanded to eight points, 66-58, with five minutes remaining. A pair of free throws by David Krombeen put Hope ahead 70-69 with 49 seconds remaining, but Carthage went back on top when Steve Djurickovic scored on a layup at :29. Hope had the last shot, but it didn't drop with one second remaining. Nate Snuggerud posted a double-double for Hope with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Will Bowser and Ty Tanis each scored 13 points while Adam Dickerson added 11.

Flying Dutchmen Rceord First Win Under Coach Matt Neil (11/27/10)

The season's first victory had a very special meaning Saturday as the Flying Dutchmen notched the first win under new coach Matt Neil. The 92-69 victory over Aquinas came in the consolation game of the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic.

Coach Neil's son, junior Logan Neil, spearheaded Hope's best offensive showing of the season, coming off the bench to score a career-high 23 points on 9-for-10 shooting, including five-for-six from three-point range.

The Flying Dutchmen shot a season-best 61%, highlighted by 11-for-18 on three-pointers. Senior Will Bowser, who was voted to the all-tournament team, added 17 points while sophomore Nate Snuggerud tallied 15 and had a game-leading six rebounds.

Flying Dutchmen Bow In Hall of Fame Opener (11/26/10)

The first victory of the season continued to elude the Flying Dutchmen who for the second consecutive game bowed to an undefeated team. This time Cornerstone (7-0) prevailed 85-76 in a semi-final game of the 15th annual Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic. Coach Matt Neil's Dutchmen will go after their first win of the young season Saturday in the 6 p.m. consolation game of the tournament against host Aquinas which bowed to Calvin 61-44 in Friday's other contest.

The Flying Dutchmen held their own in most statistical categories. The difference was Cornerstone's shooting percentage, 53% to 42%. Hope held a 44-35 rebound advantage and finished with 10 steals. Will Bowser led Hope with 20 points and eight rebounds while David Krombeen added 16 and Adam Dickerson scored a career-high 10 points.

Coaching Debut of Matt Neil Spoiled by Davenport (11/23/10)
