Flying Dutchmen Third at Indiana Tournament (4/5/08) As champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the Flying Dutchmen will compete at the NCAA Division III championships May 13-16 in Braselton, Ga. The team will prepare for nationals by competing in six tournaments this spring. The Flying Dutch enter spring competition ranked 25th nationally by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The poll is sponsored by Golf World magazine and Nike. Last fall the Flying Dutchmen, coached by Bob Ebels, captured their fifth consecutive MIAA championship to gain the automatic berth in the national tournament. It will be Hope's third consecutive trip to nationals, the fifth since 2000 and the ninth in school history. The Flying Dutchmen finished 18th at last year's nationals.
Hope College has captured its fifth consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) men's golf championship. With a come-from-behind effort, coach Bob Ebels' Flying Dutchmen finished 13 strokes ahead of Olivet over the course of the eight-tournament season. Hope did not move into first place until the seventh tournament of the year. The Flying Dutchmen won four of the year's tournaments outright, tied for first in another and were second in three others. As league champions, Hope has earned a berth in the NCAA Division III championships to be held next spring. It will be Hope's third consecutive trip to nationals, the fifth since 2000 and the ninth in school history. The Flying Dutchmen finished 18th at last year's nationals. Hope has won the MIAA championship 14 times with eight of them coming over the past nine years. Coach Ebels has guided Hope's golf fortunes since 1991. This string of MIAA titles ties the conference record for consecutive championships won by a school. Olivet won five straight titles from 1978-82. For the second time in his career, senior Tommy Yamaoka of Zeeland, Mich. (Zeeland East HS) captured MIAA medalist honors by averaging 73.5 strokes over the season's eight tournaments. Yamaoka was also the conference medalist as a freshman (2004). As a sophomore he was second in the seasonal standings and as a junior was fourth. Over 32 league tournaments in his career, he maintained a 73.3 strokes average. Yamaoka and senior teammate Matt Lapham of Brighton, Mich. (Brighton HS) earned All-MIAA first team honors four consecutive years. They become part of an elite group of only seven MIAA golfers to achieve that distinction. The only other Hope golfer to be All-MIAA four times was Eric Wohlfield from 1998-2001. Lapham tied for second place in the seasonal standings with a 73.6 strokes average. Lapham was the conference medalist as a junior (2006), was third as a sophomore and sixth as a freshman. Over 31 league tournaments in his career, he also maintained a 73.3 strokes average. Senior Ryan Sheets of Saline, Mich. (Saline HS) received All-MIAA second team honors by finishing eighth in the seasonal standings with a 76.6 average. It marked the third year he has been All-MIAA having received second team honors as a junior (2006) and first team recognition as a sophomore. Other players contributing to Hope's march to the MIAA championship included senior Steve Martindale of Midland, Mich. (H.H. Dow HS), junior Donald Kring of Williamsburg, Mich. (Traverse City St. Francis HS), and junior Donald Scholten of Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Martindale played in all eight tournaments and place 13th in the seasonal standings with a 78.8 strokes average. Kring played in six tournaments, averaging 78 strokes while Scholten played in two with an average of 75 strokes. Other members of this year's team included freshman Chris Ansel of Zeeland, Mich. (Zeeland East HS), sophomore Josh Jelenek of Laingsburg, Mich. (Laingsburg HS), junior Dan Oumedian of Jenison, Mich. (Jenison HS)and sophomore Steve Strock of Grandville, Mich. (Grandville HS).
Flying Dutchmen Move Into First in MIAA Race (10/1/07) Trailing by as many as 10 strokes early in the season, coach Bob Ebels' defending champion Flying Dutchmen have steadily chopped away at the lead held by Olivet. Hope's margin of victory on Monday was eight strokes, moving the Dutchmen into first place by five strokes with one conference tournament remaining. Hope's winning total at Watermark was 301 strokes followed by Olivet 309, Tri-State 318, Albion 32l, Adrian 323, Calvin 324, Kalamazoo 328 and Alma 334. Heading into the season-ending tournament next Saturday at Tri-State, Hope has 2,105 strokes followed by Olivet 2,110, Albion 2,179, Tri-State 2,183, Alma 2,203, Calvin 2,265, Adrian 2,301, and Kalamazoo 2,331. Hope senior Matt Lapham was the medalist for the second straight tournament at 37-36--73. Scores of other Hope golfers were Tommy Yamaoka 37-38--75, Don Scholten 37-38--75, Steve Martindale 37-41--78, and Ryan Sheets 40-39--79.
Three-Way Tie Keeps Dutchmen in MIAA Race (9/29/07)
Flying Dutchmen Keep Pace in MIAA Race (9/27/07) The Flying Dutchmen successfully defended their championship of the Red Poling Classic played Tuesday at the TPC of Michigan. Junior Don Scholten of Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS) captured medalist honors with a 72. Hope has won the Poling Classic title three times in its five-year history. The Flying Dutchmen ended with 299 strokes followed by Malone, Ohio 308, Spring Arbor 320, Calvin and Monmouth, Ill. 332 each, and Augustana, Ill. 339. Scores of other Hope golers were seniors Matt Lapham and Ryan Sheets 74 each, senior Tommy Yamaoka 79, and senior Steve Martindale 84.
Flying Dutchmen Close Gap in MIAA Race (9/21/07) Albion sophomore Mark McLaughlin captured medalist honors for the second straight tournament behind an MIAA course record total of 33-35--68. Hope senior Matt Lapham also beat the old record with a 69. The scores of other Hope golfers were Don Kring 37-37--74, Tommy Yamaoka 35-40--75, Ryan Sheets 38-37--75, and Steve Martindale 41-42--83. Yamaoka maintained his lead in the players by a single stroke over Brock Gleadall of Olivet, 218-219. Both golfers recorded 75s on Thursday.
Flying Dutchmen Use Home Course Advantage (9/17/07) After three tournaments Olivet tops the standings at 904 strokes, followed by Hope 909, Alma 931, Albion 934, Tri-State 942, Calvin 972, Adrian 1,002 and Kalamazoo 1,010. Monday's tournament medalist was Mark McLaughlin of Albion at 34-36--70. Hope senior Matt Lapham tied for second place at 38-33--71 while teammate Tommy Yamaoka finished at 38-34--72. The scores of other Hope golfers were Ryan Sheets 38-36--74, Don Kring 40-35--75 and Steve Martindale 38-39--77. Yamaoka moved into first place in the seasonal player standings. He is a stroke ahead of Brock Gleadall of Olivet, 218-219 strokes.

Yamaoka has been the tournament medalist five times in his career. Scores of other Hope golfers were junior Don Kring 77, senior Matt Lapham 82, senior Ryan Sheets 82 and senior Steve Martindale 84.

The 2007 Flying Dutchmen will be bidding for a fifth consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title and a return trip to the NCAA Division III championships. The Flying Dutchmen won the 2006 conference championship with an MIAA record performance. Five of the six golfers who figured into that effort returning this season. The Dutchmen went on to finish 18th at the NCAA championships. Tommy Yamaoka finished 15th in the field to achieve All-America honors. Winners of seven of the last eight conference championships, coach Bob Ebels’ Dutchmen this summer had a unique opportunity to prepare for the 2007 season. The team traveled to Scotland for a series of matches played on several historic courses. It was the first international trip for a Hope golf team. Four of this year’s returnees achieved All-MIAA recognition in 2006. Seniors Matt Lapham of Brighton, Mich. (Brighton HS) and Tommy Yamaoka of Zeeland, Mich. (Zeeland East HS) have each achieved All-MIAA first team honors three consecutive years. Seniors Ryan Sheets of Saline, Mich. (Saline HS) and Steve Martindale of Midland, Mich. (H.H. Dow HS) were All-MIAA second team honorees a year ago. Both Sheets and Martindale are two-time All-MIAA honorees. Hope had five golfers finish in the MIAA’s top 12 in 2006 -- #1 Matt Lapham, 71.8; #3 Nate Golomb, 73.1; #4 Tommy Yamaoka, 73.6; #10 Ryan Sheets, 77.0; and #12 Steve Martindale. Other returning letterwinners include sophomore Joshua Jelenek of Lainsburg, Mich. (Laingsburg HS), junior Donald Kring of Williamsburg, Mich. (Williamsburg HS), junior Dan Oumedian of Jenison, Mich. (Jenison HS), junior Donald Scholten of Grand Rapids, Mich. (GR Christian HS), and sophomore Steve Strock of Grandville, Mich. (Grandville HS). Each MIAA team hosts a conference tournament. Hope’s turn will be Monday, Sept. 17 at the Wuskowhan Players Club. The MIAA champion will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA championships the spring of 2008.
