The 2009 season was marked by success, with the Dutchmen earning an 8-2 regular season record and an invitation to the CCLA conference championships. Hope had the lowest seed in the tournament, but they stood up to the nationally ranked competition with an upset 16-15 OT victory over Oakland University in the quarterfinals and a hard fought loss to heavily favored Davenport University 20-17 in the semifinals.

Hope finished 9-3 on the season and accrued many highlights along the way:

  • Sophomore Eric Weber (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS), pictured above, was recognized as one of the top attackmen in the nation by being named a first team All-American by the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). He led the Flying Dutchmen to a berth in the CCLA semi-finals and a 9-3 record on the season by tallying 77 goals and leading the nation in both points-per-game with 8.273 and goals-per-game with 7.000. He scooped up a team-high 137 ground balls on the year as well. “Eric is an exceptional finisher around the cage and his intensity is unmatched. He would also be the first to credit his linemates, Allen Campbell and Dillon Fink for his scoring success.” said coach Mike Schanhals.

  • Sophomore Duncan Wierengo, pictured above, (East Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids HS) was recognized as an All-America Second Team selection at Long Stick Midfielder. Duncan had 68 ground balls, 8 assists, and one goal on the season. “Duncan has the ability to change a game with his skills and athleticism. His tenacity and ball handling ability allow us to push our transition game and possess the ball on offense.” said coach Mike Schanhals.
