2007 Season in Review

Senior Dan Tresslar Voted MIAA's MVP
All-MIAA Honors / Hope's All-time MIAA MVPs
Seven Hope men's soccer players have been presented All-MIAA honors led by senior forward Daniel Tresslar of Bloomington, Ind. (Bloomington East HS), pictured right, who has been voted the league's most valuable player. Tresslar is an All-MIAA first team honoree for the third year. This season he topped the MIAA in scoring with with 15 goals and seven assists ovr 14 league games.

Joining Tresslar on the All-MIAA first team are sophomore midfielder Kevin Bartosek of Traverse City, Mich. (TC West HS), junior back James Trebilcock of Haslett, Mich. (Haslett HS), and senior goalkeeper Mike Amerman of Indianapolis, Ind. (Brebeuf Prep). Amerman is being honored for the second time.

All-MIAA second team honorees are junior midfielder Kevin McMahon of Grand Rapids, Mich. (Forest Hills Central HS), junior back Mitchell Currie of Fort Collins, Colo. (Fort Collins HS) and sophomore forward John Turner of East Kentwood, Mich. (East Kentwood HS).

Flying Dutchmen Finish 2nd in MIAA Race

The Flying Dutchmen scored a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Kalamazoo Saturday to nail down second place in the final MIAA standings. Coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen trailed 1-0 at intermission, but scored three unanswered goals in the second half to claim the victory. Hope ends 10-3-1 in the MIAA and 13-6-1 overall.

Senior Dan Tresslar scored two goals while sophomore Ausable Schwiebert got the third. Tresslar win the MIAA scoring title finishing with 15 goals and seven assists over 14 conference games. Hope held a 24-8 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Mike Amerman was credited with four saves.

Flying Dutchmen Post Road Victory (10/31/07)

The Flying Dutchmen posted a road victory Wednesday, topping Alma 5-2 to set the stage for a season-ending showdown for second place in the MIAA standings with rival Kalamazoo.

Calvin has clinched the league championship behind an 11-1-1 record. Hope and Kalamazoo will enter the finale with 9-3-1 conference records. The Hornets on Wednesday played Kalamazoo to a scoreless tie. Hope improved to 12-6-1 overall.

Hope scored three goals in the first half and added two more in the second. Senior Dan Tresslar scored a goal and assisted on three others to maintain his hold on first place in the MIAA's individual scoring race. He has scored 13 goals in league games and assisted on seven others.

Also scoring goals were Jack Abe, John Turner, Chris Harrison and Ausable Schwiebert. Harrison and Schwiebert each had two assists.

Seniors Shine as Dutchmen Post Victory (1027/07)

Senior Dan Tresslar closed out his home field play by scoring a hat trick as the Flying Dutchmen defeated Tri-State 5-1 on Saturday. Hope's two senior goalkeepers, Mike Amerman and Mark Dishnow, also received an opportunity to play in the field and each recorded an assist. Sophomore Ausable Schwiebert scored two goals and sophomore Chris Harrison had two assists. Hope improved to 11-6-1 and heads into the final week of the regular season in third place in the MIAA at 8-3-1.

Flying Dutchmen Keep in Pace in MIAA Race (10/23/07)

The Flying Dutchmen scored their eighth victory by shutout Tuesday blanking host Olivet 5-0. Coach Steve Smiths's Dutchmen gained sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings. Calvin tops the MIAA at 9-1-1 followed by Kalamazoo 8-3-0 and Hope 7-3-1. With a 10-6-1 record the Flying Dutchmen are guaranteed their ninth straight winning campaign.

Senior Dan Tresslar scored two goals and assisted on another as the Flying Dutchmen held a 26-9 advantage in shots and 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Tresslar tops the MIAA in scoring with nine goals and four assists. Also scoring goals were Jack Abe, Anthony Palazzolo and Andrew Nichols. Four goalkeepers combined for the shutout -- Mike Amerman, Mark Dishnow, Ross Bailey and Andrew Goorhouse.

Flying Dutchmen Post Shutout Victory (10/20/07)

The Flying Dutchmen posted their seventh shutout victory of the season Saturday blanking visiting Adrian 3-0. Coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen improved to 9-6-1 overall and are 6-3-1 against MIAA opponents.

With every player getting into the game, the Flying Dutchmen outshot the Bulldogs 32-7 and had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Dan Tresslar scored a pair of goals while Chris Harrison had the other. Credited with assists were Mitchell Currie, Kevin McMahon, Ray Cotter and Mark Dishnow.

Spirited Hope/Calvin Game Ends in Tie (10/17/07)

The 63rd renewal of the Hope/Calvin soccer rivalry was not for the faint of heart. Each team scored a goal in the first and second periods and then played through two scoreless overtimes. Calvin retained its hold on first place in the MIAA race with a 7-1-1 record while the defending league champion Flying Dutchmen are tied for third place at 5-3-1. Hope is 8-6-1 overall.

Hope's goals were scored by sophomore Kevin Bartosek and junior Kevin McMahon. Each was assisted by senior Dan Tresslar. Hope held a 26-14 advantage in shots on goal and 10-8 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Mike Amerman had six saves.

Yet Another 1-0 Game is Loss for Dutchmen (10/13/07)

The Flying Dutchmen suffered their second shutout defeat of the season to Albion bowing 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. Coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen slipped to 5-3 in the MIAA and are 8-6 overall. Hope has played eight 1-0 games this season and are 4-4 in those encounters. Albion outshot Hope 12-10 and each team had three corner kicks. The winning goal came in the 95th minute by Andy Low.

Dutchmen Win Overtime Thriller (10/9/07)

The Flying Dutchmen scored a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Kalamazoo on Tuesday. Midway through the conference season, the Flying Dutchmen are tied for second place in the MIAA standings. Hope and Kalamazoo are 5-2 while Calvin leads the pack at 6-1.

Sophomore Chris Harrison (Plymouth, Minn.) came off the bench to score the game-winner in the 93rd minute taking a throw-in from junior Mitchell Currie (Fort Collins, Colo.). Hope had dominated the field during regulation play, but couldn't get the ball in the net despite out-shooting the Hornets 13-4 and holding an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kalamazoo had only one shots after halftime. Senior goalkeeper Mike Amerman (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded his sixth shutout of the season and 14th over his career.

The Flying Dutchmen have played seven 1-0 games this season winning four of them. They have won five games in-a-row since losing their first two MIAA games.

Flying Dutchmen Extend Win Streak (10/6/07)

The Flying Dutchmen extended their conference winning streak to four games Saturday blanking visiting Alma 2-0. Coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen improved to 4-2 in league play and 7-5 overall. The Flying Dutchmen scored a goal in each half. Justin Bailey scored his first of the season in the 44th minute and Dan Tresslar netted the 25th of his career in the 76th. Hope out-shot Alma 21-1, including 10-1 on-goal. Goalkeeper Mike Amerman collected his 13th career shutout.

Flying Dutchmen Win Another Close Game (10/3/07)

The Flying Dutchmen kept pace with the MIAA leaders by gaining a 2-1 victory at Tri-State on Wednesday. Coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen moved into a tie with Albion for third place with nine points behind co-leaders Calvin and Kalamazoo who have 12 points. The Flying Dutchmen are 3-2 in the MIAA and 6-5 overall.

The teams played through a scoreless first half. The Flying Dutchmen got two goals in a span of 66 seconds, the first by Kevin McMahon and the eventual game-winner by Anthony Palazzolo. Assists were credited to Dan Tresslar and Justin Bailey. Tri-State scored eight minutes later, but the Dutchmen held on to win their ninth one-goal decision of the season. Hope held a 31-8 edge in shots and 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Mike Amerman was credited with two saves.

Hat Trick by Senior Highlights Hope Win (9/29/07)

Dan Tresslar scored three goals in the span of only 20 minutes as the Flying Dutchmen topped Olivet 3-0 on Saturday. The win evens Hope's league mark at 2-2 and overall record at 5-5. The teams were locked in a scoreless tie until the 68th minute when Tresslar scored on a header. He added two more at the 71st and 88th minutes. Goalkeeper Mike Amerman collected his 13th career shutout and collected a rare assist when his punt led to Tresslar's third goal.

Flying Dutchmen Get First MIAA Win (9/25/07)

The Flying Dutchmen posted their first MIAA victory Tuesday blanking host Adrian 1-0. Senior Dan Tresslar of Bloomington, Ind. (Bloomington South HS) scored the game's only goal midway through the second half as the Dutchmen improved to 1-2 in conference games and 4-5 overall. Amazingly, Hope has played to a 1-0 decision in six of its nine games posting a 3-3 mark in those contests.

Flying Dutchmen Bow to Rival Calvin (9/22/07)

The Flying Dutchmen suffered their second straight league shutout loss Saturday bowing to rival Calvin 1-0. Coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen are 0-2 in the MIAA and 3-5 overall. The game's only goal was scored on a header in the 49th minute by Luke Holtrop. Hope outshot Calvin 14-12. Goalkeeper Andrew Goorhouse was credited with four saves.

Flying Dutchmen Drop MIAA Opener (9/19/07)

Hope's defense of its MIAA championship was dampened by visiting Albion Wednesday as the visiting Britons blanked the Flying Dutchmen 2-0. The loss puts coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen at 3-4 on the season. Albion scored their goals in the second half, the first at the 62nd minute mark by Andy Low and the second 17 minutes later by Mark Feger. Hope had just six shots on goal, including only one in the second half.

Flying Dutchmen Split Games in Ohio (9/15/07)

The Flying Dutchmen extended their string of close games this weekend splitting a pair of one-goal contests in Ohio. On Friday coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen edged Baldwin-Wallace 3-2 and then on Saturday lost to host Ohio Northern 3-2 in overtime. The Flying Dutchmen are 3-3 with every game being decided by one goal.

Hope 3, BW 2 - Junior Jack Abe scored both of Hope's goals in the second half. The second came with less than five minutes left in the game. Baldwin-Wallace gained a 2-1 halftime lead on a pair of goals by Matt Pietro. John Turner scored Hope's first half goal. Credited with assists were Anthony Palazzolo, Dan Tresslar and Turner. Hope held an 18-13 advantage in shots. Goalkeepers Mike Amerman and Andrew Goorhouse split time at the net.

Ohio Northern 3, Hope 2 (ot) - The Flying Dutchmen were unable to hold a 2-0 lead despite owning a 27-13 advantage in shots on goal. John Turner and Jack Abe scored Hope's goals with assists credited to Dan Tresslar and Justin Bailey. Ohio Northern scored twice late in the second half and got the game-winner in the 106th minutes. Hope goalkeeper Mike Amerman had two saves.

Community Day Photo Highlights
Hope's soccer teams treated large Community Day crowds to victories Saturday. The Flying Dutch defeated Saint Mary's 3-1 while the Flying Dutchmen edged North Park, Ill. 1-0 in overtime. Each Hope team stands 2-2 on the young season.

The Flying Dutch hosted their MIAA rival for a non-league game. Saint Mary's scored first, but Hope came back with three unanswered goals. Scoring were Julia Fischer, Sonya Masghati and Ellie Tresslar. Hope held a 13-7 edge in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Kelly Schaefer had seven saves.

The Flying Dutchmen scored in the 104th minutes with sophomore Ausable Schwiebert coming off the bench to get the game-winner. Hope has now played four consecutive games in which the final score was 1-0. The game was part of the Bergsma Memorial Tournament in which Hope and Calvin exchange opponents. Wheaton won the tournament with a pair of 1-0 wins over the Dutchmen and Calvin. Hope held a 10-5 shot advantage over the nationally ranked North Park team. Goalkeeper Mike Amerman recorded the shutout with four saves.

Flying Dutchmen Bow to Wheaton (9/7/07)

For the third consecutive game, the Flying Dutchmen were involved in a 1-0 decision. This time coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen came out on the short end bowing to Wheaton 1-0 on Friday in the Bergsma Memorial Invitational. In the invitational's other game, North Park, Ill. blanked Calvin 2-0.

Hope is now 1-2 on the young season. The 1-0 victory was over Guilford, N.C. while the 1-0 losses have been to Kean, N.J. and now Wheaton.

The game was a scoreless standoff until the 82nd minute when Matt Swartz kicked the game with an assist credited to Stride Elass. Hope held a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Hope goalkeeper Mike Amerman was credited with one save.

Flying Dutchmen Split Pair of 1-0 Decisions (9/1/07)

Hope split a pair of 1-0 decisions against two first-time opponents in a tournament at Ohio Wesleyan, bowing to Kean, N.J. but bouncing back to edge Guilford, N.C. Hope's goal in the victory was scored by freshman Kevin Isaac off a corner kick just 15 minutes into the game. Hope had three players named to the all-tournament team -- senior goalkeeper Mike Amerman, sophomore midfielders Justin Bailey and Kevin Bartosek.

The two-time defending MIAA Flying Dutchmen will be seeking to build on what has become the most successful decade of Hope College soccer. Through six seasons of the new millennium, the Flying Dutchmen have won 80% of their games (104-28-9) with four conference championships and four appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The team’s MIAA championship season was the 13th in school history and the eighth in 17 seasons under coach Steven Smith. The team posted a 14-4-2 overall record, won 13 of 14 league games and limited opponents to just 12 goals over 20 games.

Coach Smith ranks among the winningest NCAA Division III coaches with a career record of 238-79-22.

Captains of the team will be senior Michael Amerman of Indianapolis, Ind. (Brebeuf Prep), senior Mark Dishnow of Saline, Mich. (Saline HS), junior Kevin McMahon of Grand Rapids, Mich. (Forest Hills Central HS), and senior Dan Tresslar of Bloomington, Ind. (Bloomington South HS).

Four returning players achieved All-MIAA honors in 2006 – junior forward Jack Abe of Naperville, Ill. (Naperville North HS), Dan Tresslar, Michael Amerman, and sophomore Kevin Bartosek of Traverse City, Mich. (TC West HS).

Tresslar was voted the MIAA’s most valuable player as he achieved all-league first team honors for a second year. He led the team in scoring with 14 goals and three assists. He was also named a NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III second team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association.

Other returning letterwinners include sophomore Justin Bailey of Portage, Mich. (Portage Northern HS), junior Daniel Chesney of Clinton Township, Mich. (DeLaSalle HS), junior Mitchell Currie of Fort Collins, Colo. (Fort Collins HS), sophomore Chris Harrison of Plymouth, Minn. (Wayzata HS), sophomore John Herbert of Culver, Ind. (Culver Academy), sophomore Ben Rosema of Spring Lake, Mich. (Spring Lake HS), sophomore Ausable Schwiebert of Chelsea, Mich. (Chelsea HS), and junior James Trebilcock of Haslett, Mich.

Four of the returning players received MIAA Player of the Week honors in 2006 – Jack Abe, Michael Amerman, Mitchell Currie, and Dan Tresslar (twice).

The Flying Dutchmen will play in three tournaments, including their own Cal Bergsma Memorial Invitational, before facing the 14-game league schedule.
