2011-12 in Review

For the 12th consecutive year, Hope won the Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (MIAA) Commissioner's Cup for the best cumulative
performance in the league's 18 sports for men and women. Hope won six
MIAA championships -- men's golf, men's basketball, women's cross
country, women's tennis, and men's and women's track field.
Hope qualified individuals or teams for 11 NCAA championships -- men's
soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's golf, volleyball, men's
basketball, men's and women's swimming & diving, women's tennis, men's
and women's track & field.
Hope ranked 43rd among the 318 NCAA Division III colleges in the
Learfield Cup national standings compiled by the National Association of Collegiate Directors
of Athletics (NACDA). NCAA Division III consisted of 442 institutions
in 2011-12.
Five athletes were voted the MIAA's most valuable player -- Logan
Neil, soccer; David Krombeen, basketball; Libby Westrate, swimming,
Adam Clements, baseball (pitcher), Kyle Vanderveen, track and Liz
Ellis, basketball (defensive). Honored by the MIAA for sportsmanship
were Andy Thomson (golf) and Bobby Cawood (tennis). Named newcomers of
the year by MIAA coaches were Tarwo Konbloe (soccer and Jenna
Grasmeyer (volleyball).
Forty-four athletes were voted to the All-MIAA first teams and an
additional 34 received All-MIAA second team recognition. The MIAA
Academic Honor Roll included 199 Hope student-athletes, including 21
for a fourth consecutive year. Eleven teams received the MIAA
All-Academic Team GPA award. The women's cross country team received
the honor for a 14th consecutive year. Other teams honored included
volleyball, women's and men's swimming & diving, women's golf, men's and women's tennis,
women's basketball, women's soccer, women's track & field, and men's golf.
Three athletes achieved Division III All-America status -- David
Krombeen, basketball; Joel Rietsema, track & field; and David Whitake,
soccer.
Voted Hope's outstanding senior student-athletes were Logan Neil
(soccer) and Sarah Sohn (swimming).
In basketball, men's coach Matt Neil was named the Division III
national coach of the year and women's coach Brian Morehouse was
honored as the Michigan women's coach of the year.
Attendance at Hope's home athletic events continued to be among the
best in NCAA Division III. The men's and women's basketball programs
topped the more than 400 member schools in average home attendance
while the men's soccer and volleyball teams were each ranked second.
Two athletes, Laura Tjepkema (softball) and Chelsea Wiese (swimming)
were voted Academic All-Americans. Wiese was also presented the NCAA's
Elite 89 award for having the best cumulative grade point average
among competitors at the national championships.
Hope's outdoor athletic facilities continued to improve with the
addition of the Vande Poel-Heeringa Stadium Courts at the Hope College
Tennis Complex. The college also took steps to acquire the city-owned
Holland Municipal Stadium where Hope plays its home football games. An
immediate improvement at the stadium was the installation of
artificial turf in time for the 2012 season.
The college expanded its intercollegiate offerings with an
announcement that men's and women's lacrosse would join the MIAA and
NCAA Division III beginning in 2012-13.
