Fans Pack DeVos for Women's Rivalry Game
The largest crowd to ever witness a NCAA Division III regular season women's basketball game filled Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse on January 13, 2007. Calvin defeated Hope 60-57 before 2,911 fans. A year before a Flying Dutch game attracted 3,154 fans, as part of a men's/women's doubleheader marking the opening of the DeVos Fieldhouse. The alltime Division III record attendance is 4,001 fans for the national championship game during the 1996 tournament.

2008-09 in Review

  • In the first meeting of 08-09 at DeVos Fieldhouse Hope won 73-49. The Flying Dutch jumped out to an early 12-2 lead, expanded it to 41-22 at the half and was on top by as many as 32 points in the second half. Junior guard Jenny Cowen scored a career-high 20 points while Philana Greene added 12 points. The Flying Dutch were credited with 21 steals and eight blocked shots. No Calvin player scored in double figures and the starting lineup was limited to eight points. box score
  • A clutch three-point basket and then two free throws in the final seconds by junior Jenny Cowen helped the Flying Dutch escape with a 68-65 victory before an announced crowd of 3,175 in Calvin's new VanNoord Arena. Earlier this season Cowen had scored a career-high 20 points in a victory over Calvin. On Saturday she upped her career-best to 26 points, behind four three-pointers. Calvin's game-long full-court press challenged the Flying Dutch. Hope led 39-27 at halftime and by as many as 15 points in the second half, but the Knights battled back to tie the score 58-58 and took a 61-58 lead with three minutes left in the game. Cowen nailed a three-pointer to break a 63-63 tie with 45 seconds remaining to assure Hope's 22nd win of the season. box score

  • The Hope/Calvin women's basketball rivalry started in 1965 with a 49-35 Calvin victory.
  • Through 95 games, Calvin leads the all-time series 61-34.
