Hope College is situated in a residential area two blocks from the central business district of Holland, Michigan, a community of 40,000 which was founded in 1847 by Dutch settlers. Located on Lake Macatawa and approximately five miles from beautiful Lake Michigan, Holland has long been known as a summer resort area. In 2002 Holland was honored as one of the nation's best-preserved and unique communities. Holland was also designated an All-America city in 1996. Hope's hometown in 2007 earned national attention in Forbes magazine as one of the five safest metro areas in the United States. In 2011, and again in 2012, Holland was recognized for its beauty in the “America in Bloom” competition, a nationwide beautification initiative that encourages the community-wide use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements.
