Editorial Comment
THE HOLLAND SENTINEL
Plenty of people deserve credit for staging last weekend's NCAA Division III women's basketball championships at DeVos Fieldhouse, an event that showed outsiders Hope College and Holland at their best. Tournament director Eva Dean Folkert headed a team of community volunteers and Hope staff -- many of whom must have sorely missed accompanying the Hope men's team to its Final Four appearance in Salem, Va. -- that kept everything running smoothly and made fans of the participating colleges feel welcome. Kudos also must go to the Holland Area Convention and Visitors Bureau for its services to visitors and to the Hamilton and Holland high school pep bands for helping create a more festive atmosphere. Finally, credit goes to local basketball fans who turned out in big numbers even though Hope's Flying Dutch weren't playing in the Final Four. The tournament drew nearly 5,000 fans over two days, surpassing the attendance at the men's Final Four, with about two-thirds of the tickets sold locally. We suspect the crowds would have been even bigger if many of our most fervent local basketball fans hadn't accompanied the Hope men's team to Virginia.
