Martha Miller

Martha Miller Center
for Global Communication

The Martha Miller Center for Global Communication houses the departments of communication and of modern and classical languages, as well as the offices of international education and multicultural life. It is also the location for the director of the college's new Center for Faithful Leadership program, which is currently under development. The 49,000 square foot building is named in honor of the late Martha Miller, who died in 1999 at age 96, in recognition of a $3 million leadership gift her family made on behalf of the project through her estate. The project totals $12 million.

Martha Muller '24 Miller was connected to Hope by generations of experience. Following her own time at the college as a student, all three of her children attended as did several of her grandchildren. In the weeks before her death at age 96, she had been making arrangements with her family to make a major gift to the college, with her children following through on her wishes after she had passed away. The building is named in her honor in recognition of the gift and the family's long-standing relationship with Hope.

  • The Martha Miller Center for Global Communication is named in honor of the late Martha Miller, who died in 1999 at age 96, in recognition of a $3 million leadership gift her family made on behalf of the project through her estate.

  • The two-story, 49,000 square foot building houses the departments of communication and modern and classical languages, and the offices of international education and multicultural life, with an emphasis on ways that the four programs can interconnect. • The department of communication relocated from Lubbers Hall, and the department of modern and classical languages relocated from Graves Hall. The office of international education moved from a home located in the center of campus, and the office of multicultural life relocated from the college's DeWitt Center. The moves will in turn provide additional space in the existing facilities for use by other programs.

  • The Martha Miller Center for Global Communication was built on Columbia Avenue between 10th and 11th streets, on property formerly occupied by Lincoln Elementary School.

  • The college broke ground in late April of 2004. The Martha Miller Center opened for the 2005-06 school year, with the dedication being held October 15, 2005

  • Construction manager for the Martha Miller Center was Lakewood Construction Co. of Holland.

  • The architectural firm was Design Plus of Grand Rapids.

  • The project totaled $12 million.
