About the Van Andels

Thanks to the vision and generous leadership gift from David '83 and Carol Girod '81 Van Andel, Hope College will have a strengthened intercollegiate athletic program. The gift from the David and Carol Van Andel Foundation has made the new state-of-the-art Van Andel Soccer Stadium at Hope College a reality. David and Carol are passionate supporters of community involvement and athletics. David serves on the college's Board of Trustees and the Van Andels have four sons, two of whom currently attend Hope College.

David is chairman and CEO of the Grand Rapids-based Van Andel Institute and also serves as chairman and CEO of Idea Sphere Inc. Previously he held the position of chief operating officer of Amway's Pyxis Innovations Business Unit and is a current member of the corporation's Board of Directors, serving on its executive and audit committees. Prior to Pyxis he served as senior vice president of the Americas and Europe, overseeing the Amway business activities in North America and 22 European and 11 Latin American affiliates, and had been in various positions at Amway since 1977. David is the co-owner and chairman of the Grand Rapids Griffins, an American Hockey League team, and is active in numerous business and community organizations including The Right Place, Inc., and The Economic Club.

Carol is an active volunteer and philanthropist committed to children's issues, healthy lifestyles and community development. In addition to her role as executive director of the David and Carol Van Andel Foundation, she has served on boards and committees for dozens of West Michigan organizations. She currently serves on the boards of Bethany Christian Services, Friends of the Public Museum of Grand Rapids, Grand Action, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services Foundation, the advisory board of the Van Andel Education Institute and the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
