HOLLAND -- Awards for scholastic achievement and
service have been presented to graduating Hope College
seniors.

The awards honor students for achievement in
specific areas of study and service. The students were
recognized during the college's annual Honors Convocation on
Thursday, April 26.

The M. Harold Mikle Prize for Communication was
presented to Louis Telmon Canfield of Whitehall and Kristin
Anne Sorensen of Beecher, Ill.

Kimberly Sue Grotenhuis of Holland received the
Southland Medal (Gerrit H. Albers Gold Medal), which is
awarded to the outstanding woman of the senior class, and
the John Schouten Award for the outstanding female student-
athlete. The Otto Vander Velde All-Campus Award was
presented to Joseph William Veldman of Sawyer.

The Paul G. Fried Prize in International Education
was presented to Jacob Lyani Sitati of Nairobi, Kenya.
Jordan Ryan Schmidt of Eagan, Minn., was recognized as the
recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate
Fellowship. Technos International Prizes were awarded to
Whitney Elizabeth Schraw of Boyne City and Ghadeer J. Yaser
of Ramallah, Palestine.

Robert Brian Wondergem of Johnson City, Tenn.,
received the Herman Miller Art Award.

The Biology Service Award and the Patterson
Memorial Prize in Biology were presented to Justin Lewis
Grobe of Mason.

The American Institute of Chemists' Awards were
presented to Julia Rachel Koeppe of Fayetteville, Ark., and
Brandy L. Schenck of Grand Ledge. Nathan Douglas Ide of
Grand Haven and Junu Shrestha of Kathmandu, Nepal, received
Pharmacia Company Awards for Research in Chemistry. The
Almon T. Godfrey Prize in Chemistry was presented to Jordan
Ryan Schmidt of Eagan, Minn.

The A.A. Raven Prizes in Communication were
presented to Nathan Carl Hart of Holland and Kristin Anne
Sorensen of Beecher, Ill. Katherine Lynn Jen of Hudsonville
was presented with the Lambda Pi Eta Book Award in
communication.

The Boundy Computer Science Award was received by
Daron Jon Vroon of Jackonsville, Fla. Laura Ellen Grit of
Fort Collins, Colo., was the winner of the Computer Science
Senior Prize.

Florence Cavanaugh Dance Awards were presented to
Jodi Marie Kurtze of Elkhart, Ind.; Christine Lynne Lutz of
Rochester, N.Y.; Emily Sara Poel of Grand Rapids; and Amy
Joyce Vertalka of Grand Ledge.

Allan C. Kinney Memorial Awards, presented to the
outstanding graduating seniors majoring in economics and
business administration, were presented to Bradley James
Chassee of Wyoming and Andrea Kristin Douglass of
Libertyville, Ill. The Outstanding Student in Management
Accounting Award was presented to Michelle A. McDougal of
Portage. Daniel Alan Besselsen of Hudsonville received the
Award for Outstanding Accounting Student. Radoslav Rumenov
Iliev of Sofia, Bulgaria, received the Economics, Management
and Accounting Faculty Recognition Award. Kirsten Erika
Slotten of Grand Ledge received the Wall Street Journal
Award.

Marcy Lynn Slotman of Hamilton was the winner of
the Marguerite E. Kinkema Special Education Award, while the
winners of Egbert Winter Education Awards were Ryan Michael
Coghill of Cary, Ill., and Kristin Anne Koenigsknecht of St.
Johns.

The Clarence De Graaf English Award was presented
to Sally Lynn Smits of Denver, Colo. The Erika Brubaker '92
Awards for Proficiency in Literature were presented to
Andrew Louis Lotz of Hudsonville and Kirsten Erika Slotten
of Grand Ledge. The Sandrene Schutt Award for Proficiency
in Literature was presented to Kyla Michelle Moore of
Kenosha, Wis.

Tulip City Gem and Mineral Club Awards were
presented to Yasemin I. Tulu of Holland and Jeffrey Douglas
Wilcox of Saline.

Ray De Young History Prizes were awarded to
Melanie Diane Lofquist of Port Huron and Whitney Elizabeth
Schraw of Boyne City. Louis Telmon Canfield of Whitehall
received the Miles Award in Law.

Sheri Lynn Hartman of Indianapolis, Ind., received
the Lawrence "Doc" Green Award in Athletic Training.
Kristin Anne Koenigsknecht of St. Johns and Craig Robert
Veldman of Jenison received Dorothy and Russell Siedentop
Awards, presented to outstanding members of the basketball
teams. Recipients of the William and Mabel Vanderbilt Sr.
Family Awards in kinesiology were Chad Michael Beaver of
Gladwin, Scott Andrew Houser of Portage and Angela Kathryn
Lower of Ionia. Alvin W. Vanderbush Student Athlete Awards
were presented to Amy M. Brower of Hamilton and Erica Jane
Torgerson of Weidman. Angela Kathryn Lower of Ionia
received the Kathleen Ann White '76 Memorial Award.

Jordan Ryan Schmidt of Eagan, Minn., received the
Albert E. Lampen Mathematics Prize.

Several students were honored for achievement in
the study of a foreign language. Joel Stephen Ward of
Oolitic, Ind., received the Ruth W. Todd Classics Prize, and
the Delta Phi Alpha Book Prize was presented to Tracy Lynn
Miller of Gurnee, Ill. The Linda D. Palmer Memorial Award
in French was presented to Kristin Marie Bentivolio of
Milford and Christine Anne Misiewicz of Lansing. Jennifer
R. Blackwell of Breckenridge, Colo., received the Martin N.
Ralph Memorial Award in Spanish, while Isaiah Michael
Hoogendyk of Kalamazoo received the Edward J. Wolters
Classics Award. John William Brandkamp of Staten Island,
N.Y., received the Eta Sigma Phi Book Prize, and the
Marguerite Prins French Award was presented to Elizabeth
Jane Jungst of Englewood, Fla. Sarah Elizabeth Skriloff of
Sarasota, Fla., received the Laura Alice Boyd Memorial Award
in German, and Amy Rae Donley of Rockford was awarded the
Barbara E. Geeting Memorial Award in German.

The Delta Omicron Senior Honor Award in music was
presented to Laurie Elizabeth Zeller of Waterford. Douglas
James Mulder of Holland and David Timothy Van Der Laan of
Lombard, Ill., received Robert W. Cavanaugh Senior Music
Awards. David Timothy Van Der Laan of Lombard, Ill., also
won the Roger Rietberg Chapel Choir Award.

The Senior Award for Nursing was given to Renee C.
Lick of Shelby Township; the Miriam Joyce Van Eyl Award was
presented to Jennifer Lee Mark of Manistee; and the
Christian Service Award was awarded to Sarah Joy DeHaan of
Grandville. Those named to the Sigma Theta Tau honorary
society in nursing were: Stacey Leigh Flegel of Ithaca,
Carolyn Elizabeth Kremm of Ann Arbor, Renee C. Lick of
Shelby Township, Jennifer Lee Mark of Manistee, Lauren
Louise Piotrowski of Troy and Amy Colette Szymczak of Grand
Rapids.

The Charles E. Lake Memorial Prize in Philosophy
was presented to Aaron Michael Keck of Lansing.

The Douwe B. Yntema Prizes in physics and
engineering were awarded to Steven Edward Molesa of Troy and
Daniel Paul Valente of West Bloomfield.

Recipients of James Dyke van Putten Political
Science Prizes were: Louis Telmon Canfield of Whitehall;
Radoslav Rumenov Iliev of Sofia, Bulgaria; Aaron Michael
Keck of Lansing; and Andrew Louis Lotz of Hudsonville.

Brett Matthew Bebber of Littleton, Colo., was
awarded the American Bible Society Book Award, while Rebecca
Lynn LaRoy of Kalamazoo was awarded the Pietenpol Prize.
Ettienne Michele Jackson of Ypsilanti received the Senior
Biblical Prize, while Amanda Dawn Vaalburg of Ann Arbor was
presented with the Sloan-Stegeman Mission Prize. John
Richard Vander Wilt Awards in religion were presented to
Daniel George Wels Lannin of Elgin, Ill.; Eric Allyn
Schrotenboer of Zeeland; and Joshua Jay Tibbe of Newaygo.

The winners of Jeanette Gustafson Memorial Gifts
in sociology and social work were: Whitney Anne Lepard of
Grand Haven and Sarah Elizabeth Polk of Center Line. Senior
Sociology Awards were presented to Timothy Sydney Cupery of
Harbor Beach and Anna L. Holt of Verron. Rebecca Ruth
Jackson of Lexington, Mass., received the Social Work Senior
Award.

The recipient of the Theatre Department Senior
Prize was Michelle Rene Rynbrandt of Cleo. Dan Lee Taylor
of Story City, Iowa, received the Brad Williams Memorial
Award.

The Kent Medical Foundation Award was presented to
Jesse Bryant McKey of Grand Rapids.
