Hope Hosted Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

HOLLAND - Researchers from throughout Michigan and beyond participated in the ninth annual Michigan Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (MUMC), held at Hope College on Saturday, Oct. 21, in the A. Paul Schaap Science Center.

Students from several colleges and universities presented findings from their mathematical research in talks throughout the day. Approximately 100 faculty and students attended from 14 different colleges and universities.

The keynote address, "The Fractal Geometry of the Mandelbrot Set," was delivered by Dr. Bob Devaney of the faculty at Boston University. The 18 additional presentations included 12 talks by undergraduate students, four of which were delivered by Hope students.

The Hope students' talks were: "Spiriling out of Control," by juniors Dan Emmendorfer of Muskegon and Martha Precup of Boyne City, based on work done with Dr. Aaron Cinzori, associate professor of mathematics; "The Dynamics of a Volleyball Serve," by sophomore Dan Lithio of Downers Grove, Ill., based on work with Dr. Tim Pennings, professor of mathematics; "Mathematical Modeling of a Grass-Army Worm-Wasp Ecosystem," by senior Brett Jager of Kalamazoo, based on work with Pennings and Dr. Tom Bultman, professor of biology and chairperson of the department; and "Graph Pebbling" by senior Megan Patnott of Holland, based on work done with Dr. Airat Bekmetjev, assistant professor of mathematics.

In addition to Hope, the presenters were from Calvin College, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Oakland University, Ohio University, the University of Kentucky, the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan at Flint, the University of Toledo and Wayne State University.
