Annual Recognition Luncheon Honors Faculty
HOLLAND - Hope College honored faculty members for service, academic achievement and professional involvement during the college's annual recognition luncheon on Monday, Jan. 10.
The luncheon traditionally marks the beginning of the college's second semester. Participating were James N. Boelkins, provost; James M. Gentile, dean for the natural sciences; Jon J. Huisken, dean for academic services and registrar; Nancy S. Miller, dean for the social sciences; and William D. Reynolds, dean for the arts and humanities.
Honored for 40 years of service was Maxine DeBruyn (dance), while Ray Smith (kinesiology) was recognized for 35 years of service. Recognized for 30 years of service were: Roberta Kraft (kinesiology), Jim Piers (sociology and social work), Stuart Sharp (music) and John Shaughnessy (psychology).
Honored for 25 years of service were: Chris Barney (biology) and Nick Perovich (philosophy). Recognized for 20 years of service were: Paul DeYoung (physics), Jenny Powers (religion) and Steve Taylor (chemistry).
Matt DeJongh (computer science) was named a Towsley Research Scholar. Steve Smith (kinesiology) and Leslie Wessman (education) received Ruth and John Reed Faculty Achievement Awards. Patricia Roehling (psychology) and Kathleen Verduin (English) received this year's Provost's Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Barry Bandstra (religion) and Carl Heideman (computing and information technology) received Provost's Awards for Service to the Academic Program.
Faculty honored for serving on the college's Teaching Enhancement Workshop Committee were: James B. Heisler, chair (economics and business administration), Donald L. Cronkite (biology), Barbara Mezeske (English) and Joanne Stewart (chemistry). Honored as workshop presenters were: Jane Dickie (psychology), Janis Gibbs (history), Maura Reynolds (Latin, and academic advising), Mike Silver (chemistry), Debra Swanson (sociology and social work) and John Yelding (education).
Joel Toppen (political science) was recognized for having received the 2004 Hope Outstanding Professor Educator (H.O.P.E.) Award.
Faculty and staff acknowledged as authors and editors during the past year were: Maria Claudia Andre (Spanish); Donald Bruggink (Van Raalte Institute); Donald Cronkite (biology); David Cunningham (CrossRoads Project, and religion); Annie Dandavati (political science); Miguel De La Torre (religion); the Department of Education, with editors Barbara Mezeske (English) and Richard Mezeske (education); James Herrick (communication); Joseph La Porte (philosophy); Thomas Ludwig (psychology); David Myers (psychology); Richard Ray (kinesiology); Jack Ridl (English); Patricia Roehling (psychology); David Ryden (political science); Peter Schakel (English); Heather Sellers (English); Robert Swierenga (A.C. Van Raalte Institute, and history); and Elliot Tanis (mathematics, emeritus).
Members of the music faculty honored for accomplishments as performing artists were: Brian Coyle and Mihai Craioveanu. Members of the art faculty recognized for their work as artists were: Judy Hillman, Billy Mayer, Del Michel (emeritus) and Steven Nelson. Members of the kinesiology faculty honored for accomplishments as coaches were: Bob Ebels (men's golf), Leigh Sears (women's soccer), Mark Northuis (women's cross country), John Patnott (men's and women's swimming) and Glenn Van Wieren (men's basketball).
Faculty honored for being named officers of professional organizations were: Brian Coyle (music), William Polik (chemistry), Debra Sietsema (nursing), Neal Sobania (international education, and history) and Scott VanderStoep (psychology).
Faculty and staff recognized for receiving honors and awards were: Charles Aschbrenner (music), Barry Bandstra (religion), Maxine DeBruyn (dance), James Gentile (dean for the natural sciences), Alfredo Gonzales (associate provost), James Herrick (communication), Thomas Ludwig (psychology), Nancy Miller (dean for the social sciences), Richard Ray (kinesiology), Mary Scheerhorn (nursing); and the staff of the Van Wylen Library.
