MIAA Honors Hope Athletes in Several Fall Sports
HOLLAND -- All-conference honors have been presented to Hope College athletes in several fall sports by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
FOOTBALL
The MIAA football champion Flying Dutchmen placed 13 players on the all-conference teams.
Senior quarterback Phil Butler of Howard City (Tri-County HS) was voted the league's most valuable offensive player. He threw 29 touchdown passes this season, including 19 in league games as the Flying Dutchmen won five of six league games and were 7-3 overall.
Butler is one of eight Hope players on the All-MIAA first teams. He is joined on offense by sophomore tackle Josh DeHaan of Fremont (Fremont HS), senior receiver Joe VerSchueren of Muskegon (Reeths Puffer HS), and senior tailback Dan Bloemers of Caledonia (Caledonia HS).
Hope's All-MIAA first team honorees on defense include senior end Matt Beaver of Gladwin (Gladwin HS), senior linebqacker Bill Rozema of Holland (Holland HS), junior linebacker Paul Hoeksema of Grand Rapids (Creston HS), and junior defensive back Andy Snyder of Berrien Springs (Berrien Springs HS).
Named to the All-MIAA second team were junior offensive tackle Mike Verwys of Otsego (Otsego HS), senior tight end Scott Jeschke of Gobles (Gobles HS), junior receiver Jeff Eldersveld of Grand Rapids (East Grand Rapids HS), senior defensive back Brian Fielhauer of Byron (Byron HS), and junior punter Seth Kovarik of Traverse City (Traverse City Central HS).
Receiving coaches' honorable mention were senior Travis Jager of Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Tim Keur of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS), junior Jason Misner of Kalamazoo (Parchment HS), junior Bryan Scheffers of Portage (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Dan Schofield of Portage (Portage Central HS), junior Jake Schrock of Clarksville (Clarksville HS), freshman Andy Serrano of Holland (Holland HS), and junior Matt Thorne of Vermontville (Maple Valley HS).
MEN'S SOCCER
Six members of Hope's MIAA champion men's soccer team have been awarded all-conference honors.
Players named to the first team are sophomore forward Devin McNeil of Lansing (DeWitt HS), senior midfielder Kevney Dugan of Holland (Holland Christian HS), and senior back Steve Lepper of Midland (Dow HS).
Second team honorees included sophomore forward Karter Klingenberg of Holland (Holland Christian HS), senior midfielder Ed Huebner and junior back Todd Chaappa, both of Portage (Portage Northern HS).
Huebner, who achieved All-MIAA recognition four consecutive years, was also the co-recipient of the Zuidema Award for his contributions to team play. The other recipient is Mike Poloha of Adrian.
Receiving coaches' honorable mention was senior Eric Plewka of Whitehall, Mich. (Whitehall HS).
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The MIAA has presented six Hope women's soccer players with all-conference honors and head coach Lindsey Engelsman has been honored by her peers. Engelsman, who served a one-year appointment as head coach, was named the MIAA's coach of the year for guiding the Flying Dutch to their first-ever conference championship and a berth in the NCAA playoffs.
Hope players named to the All-MIAA first team are junior midfielder Dawn Gillam of Portage, (Portage Northern HS), freshman fullback Rachel Sauerman of Naperville, Ill. (Naperville Central HS), and freshman goalkeeper Holly Nestle of Mason (Mason HS).
Second team All-MIAA honorees include sophomore midfielder Negeen Masghati of Naperville, Ill. (Naperville Central HS), sophomore midfielder Tess Scholz of Portage (Portage Northern HS), and freshman fullback Kendall Aliber of Birmingham, Mich. (Marian HS).
Receiving coaches' honorable mention was senior Catie Neidlinger of Marshall (Marshall HS).
VOLLEYBALL
Two Hope volleyball players have received All-MIAA volleyball honors. The Flying Dutch finished third in the conference standings and won 21 matches overall.
Senior setter McKenna Troyan of Sylvania, Ohio (Northview HS) is a first team honoree while senior middle hitter Katie Hall of Holland (West Ottawa HS) was named to the second team.
Hope players receiving coaches' honorable mention are sophomore Shawna Buche of Saranac, (Lakewood HS) and senior Anna Eriks of Holland (West Ottawa HS).
CROSS COUNTRY
All-conference honors in cross country were presented to 10 Hope College athletes. The recognition from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is based on performance in the league jamboree and championship meet.
Senior Peter Derby of Cadillac (Cadillac HS) has achieved All-MIAA first team recognition. He finished 10th at the MIAA championships. Derby has also been named to the Division III All-Region team.
Hope runners named to the All-MIAA men's second team are freshman Ryan TerLouw of Pella, Iowa (Pella HS), sophomore Tyson Warner of Portage (Portage Northern HS), and sophomore Kyle Williams of Plainwell (Plainwell HS).
Junior Tina Pike of Rochester, Minn. (Century HS) achieved All-MIAA first team honors in women's cross country for the second time. She finished sixth at the MIAA championships and was also named to the Division III All-Region team.
Five runners were named to the All-MIAA women's second team -- freshman Ashley Dean of Cadillac (Cadillac HS), senior Martha Graham of Midland (Midland HS), freshman Monique Hoyle of Delton, (Delton-Kellogg HS), freshman Alison Mejeur of St. Joseph (St. Joseph HS), and freshman Leslie Tableman of Lansing (Eastern HS).
Both Hope cross country teams finished third in their respective conference standings. At the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, the men finished seventh while the women tied for ninth place.
GOLF
Eight Hope golfers achieved All-MIAA recognition as the Flying Dutchmen captured the league men's championship while the Flying Dutch were second in the women's standings.
Junior Ryan Shedd of Coldwater, Mich. was the league medalist as Hope captured the top individual honors in MIAA men's golf for the sixth consecutive year. He was joined on the All-MIAA first team by junior Justin Spyker of Portage, Mich. (Portage Central HS) and senior captain Jeff Meville of Grandville, Mich. (Jenison HS). Gaining All-MIAA second team recognition were junior Kody Taylor of Greenville, Mich. (Greenville HS), freshman Ryan Otto of St. Joseph, Mich. (Lake Michigan Catholic HS).
Senior Lacey Wicksall of Traverse City, Mich. (TC Central HS) captured All-MIAA first team honors for the third year in her career. Receiving All-MIAA second team recognition were sophomore Brittany Philo of Greenville, Mich. (Greenville HS) and freshman Holly Sneller of Holland, Mich. (Hamilton HS).
