New Edition of Biochemistry Text Published

Posted November 27, 2000

HOLLAND -- Benjamin/Cummings, an imprint of Addison, Wesley, Longman Publishing, has announced the publication of the third edition of the textbook, "Modern Experimental Biochemistry" by Dr. Rodney F. Boyer, who is the Drs. Edward and Elizabeth Hofma Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Hope College.

The purpose of the text is to provide undergraduate science students with a modern laboratory experience in biochemistry and molecular biology.

The new book offers a unique two-part organization. Part I provides students with an in-depth theoretical discussion for laboratory techniques and experiments introduced in the book. Part II offers procedures for 15 tested experiments that focus on biomolecules and biochemical processes.

Some of the special features of the book include state-of-the-art theory and procedures, important safety and environmental precautions for each experiment, study questions at the end of each chapter and experiment, and abundant references and internet websites for further study.

The previous editions of the text became the most widely used books for the biochemistry teaching and research laboratory.

Boyer, who retired at the end of the 1999-2000 academic year, joined the Hope College chemistry faculty in 1974. During his 26 years at the college, he directed the research of more than 70 undergraduate students, published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and wrote three biochemistry textbooks. His research interests include the metabolism of iron and reactive forms of ribonucleic acid (RNA).

He is now living with his wife, Christel, in Bozeman, Mont. His professional activities in retirement include serving on the Task Force on Educational Resources for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).
