Retiring Professor Celebrated at
Combined Choir and Symphonette Concert

Posted April 11, 2001

HOLLAND -- The Hope College Chorus, Chapel Choir and Symphonette will combine for a concert on Tuesday, April 17, at 8 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Although a special concert due to the collaboration of these groups, this year's event takes on special meaning. The finale will be a performance of Beethoven's "Fantasy for Piano, Choir, and Orchestra," with Joan Conway, retiring professor of music, as celebrated guest artist.

Conway has been a member of the Hope faculty since 1969. She has coordinated the Faculty Recital Series for more than two decades in addition to performing in it since coming to Hope.

She is well-known throughout the Midwest as a soloist, chamber player and accompanist. She is past president of the Michigan Music Teachers' Association (MMTA). The MMTA named her State Teacher of the Year in 1992. In 1994, the MMTA presented her with its first Distinguished Service Award.

Conway received an Alumni Citation from her undergraduate college, Lebanon Valley College, in 1996. She holds a master's in music from Manhattan School of Music.

She spent 13 years performing and teaching in New York City before coming to Hope. Among other venues, she has played in Carnegie Recital Hall, Town Hall and Lincoln Center Library.

The evening will also include Handel's "Coronation Anthem No. 2," "The King Shall Rejoice" and the "Antiphon," from Vaughn Williams' "Five Mystical Songs."

Richard Piippo and Brad Richmond will be conducting the groups.

Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located on College Avenue at 12th Street. Additional information may be obtained by calling the college's department of music at (616) 395-7650.
