HOLLAND -- The exhibition "Bernard Maisner: Entrance to the Scriptorium" will open in the gallery of the De Pree Art Center at Hope College on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

There will be a reception in conjunction with the exhibition on Friday, Sept. 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The exhibition's curator, Terrence Dempsey, S.J., will present the address "The Pursuit of the Spirit in Contemporary Art" on Friday, Sept. 8, at 5 p.m. in Cook Auditorium of the De Pree Art Center. Maisner will give a gallery talk on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. The public is invited to all of the events, and admission is free.

In addition, Maisner will conduct a manuscript illumination workshop in the De Pree Design Studio, Room 129, on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $20, with enrollment limited to 20. Please call the De Pree Art Center at (616) 395-7500 for additional information.

Maisner's techniques and imagery recall art of the Middle Ages. His paintings and illuminated manuscripts incorporate elements of calligraphy, gold leafing and mosaic, exploring a variety of ideas.

His techniques and images unite with the written word deriving from a wide range of sources, such as Anais Nin, Franz Kafka and John Cage from modern times, and Heraclitus and Marcus Aurelius from earlier cultures. "Whatever the written word illustrated may be, Maisner achieves a meaningful balance of high intelligence, devotion and deep passion," said Dr. Jack Wilson, professor emeritus of art at Hope.

The De Pree Art Center is located on the corner of 12th Street and Columbia Avenue. The gallery's regular hours following Labor Day Weekend will be Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is handicapped accessible.

The exhibition will continue through Sunday, Oct. 22.
