Interim Dean of the Chapel

Posted October 5, 2000

HOLLAND -- The Rev. Dr. Timothy Brown of Holland has been appointed interim dean of the chapel at Hope College.

Brown, who is a member of the faculty at Western Theological Seminary, will serve in the role during the spring semester. The current dean, the Rev. Ben Patterson, is leaving Hope to assume responsibilities at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. Hope is in the process of conducting a national search for his successor.

"We think that Tim Brown is a great choice for this interim assignment," said Hope College President Dr. James Bultman. "As an alumnus, member of the Board of Trustees and a part-time faculty member, Tim knows our institution and students well. We're very grateful to the seminary for allowing us to have him on a part-time basis during his planned spring sabbatical from Western."

In addition, during the interim period additional responsibilities will be assumed by the Rev. Paul Boersma, a chaplain at Hope since 1994. "We are pleased that we'll have a person of Paul's caliber to assume more responsibility during this time of transition," Bultman said.

Brown, who is a 1973 Hope graduate, is the Henry Bast Professor of Preaching at Western Theological Seminary. He joined the seminary faculty in 1995.

From 1983 to 1995, he was pastor of Christ Memorial Church in Holland. He has also served the First Reformed Church of South Holland, Ill., from 1970 to 1983, and Fellowship Reformed Church in Hudsonville from 1976 to 1980.

Brown delivered the college's Baccalaureate sermon in 1992. He has written several articles for "The Church Herald," "The Reformed Review" and "Perspectives" magazine.

He holds an M.Div. and a D.Min. from Western Theological Seminary.

His wife, Nancy, is a 1971 graduate of Hope. They have three children, all of whom attended Hope: Sarah, Jonathan and Rebekah.
