New Lecture Series Will Examine Sports Medicine

          HOLLAND -- A new lecture series at Hope College
  will focus on a variety of issues in sports medicine
  throughout the 1997-98 school year.
          The series is designed for students, educators and
  clinicians alike.  It is co-sponsored by the college and
  Holland Community Hospital.
          "The series provides opportunities for health care
  professionals with an interest in physically active patients
  to learn from the best and the brightest representatives of
  the various disciplines that comprise the broad field of
  sports medicine," said Dr. Richard Ray, who is the series
  coordinator and an athletic trainer and associate professor
  of kinesiology.
          According to Ray, athletic trainers, physical
  therapists and physicians are particularly encouraged to
  attend.  A total of five lectures have been scheduled for
  the 1997-98 school year.
          The series will open on Wednesday, Oct. 15, with
  "Mild Brain Injury in Sports:  Developing Objective Criteria
  for Return to Play," by Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz of the
  University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  On Thursday,
  Nov. 13, Dr. David Lamb of The Ohio State University will
  present "Creatine Supplementation in Athletics."
          On Thursday, Jan. 15, Dr. Scott Lephart of the
  University of Pittsburgh will present "The Role of
  Proprioception and Neuromuscular Control in the Management
  and Rehabilitation of Athletic Injury."  Dr. Ed Wojtys of
  the University of Michigan will present "Neuromuscular
  Function and its Role in Knee Injuries in Women" on
  Wednesday, Feb. 25.
          The series will conclude on Monday, April 6, with
  "Nutritional Assessment of Athletes:  Strategies for Health
  Professionals" by Jean Storlie of JS Associates Inc.
          Each lecture will be presented in Wichers
  Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music on the Hope campus.
  Admission is free.
