Congressman Hoekstra Announces Hope to
Receive $250,000 for Science Center

Posted November 22, 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, has announced that the federal funding package passed by the House on Saturday, Nov. 20, includes $250,000 that will contribute to the recent construction and renovation of the college’s science center.

“Hope College has long been nationally recognized for its reputation in undergraduate science education,” Hoekstra said. “The expansion and renovation of the Peale Science Center has allowed Hope College to improve its programs by expanding its method of collaborative mentoring research among faculty and students to its sciences.”

The funding was included in the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2005. It passed the House as part of the federal omnibus appropriations package on November 20.

Hope renovated and expanded the science center to accommodate changes in technology, to enable the college to place even greater emphasis on collaborative student-faculty research, and to meet the increased need for space resulting from the college’s growth since the Peale Science Center opened in 1973.

The expanded science center houses the departments of biology, chemistry, the geological and environmental sciences, nursing and psychology. Emphasis is focused on the molecular and biochemical study of life through investigative laboratory exercises and collaborative student and faculty research projects.

The facility also includes cutting-edge technology to facilitate student learning, including a fully equipped nursing laboratory designed to enable nursing students to train in effective holistic care.

The science center project, which totaled $36 million, included the renovation of the existing, 72,800 square foot Peale Science Center and the construction of a new, 85,900 square foot new building. Construction began in March of 2002, and the new building opened in August of 2003 and the renovated building in August of this year. The science center was dedicated on Friday, Oct. 8.
