Posted April 25, 2002
HOLLAND -- Awards as the outstanding senior athletes among
Hope College graduates in the class of 2002 were presented to two
students during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday
(April 25).
Amy Brower of Hamilton was presented the John Schouten Award
while Joshua Boss of Jenison is the recipient of the Otto van der
Velde All-Campus Award.
The Schouten award is given to a senior woman who, in
addition to excelling in athletics, possess other strong
character traits and leadership abilities. The award is named in
memory of John "Jack" Schouten who was a long-time physical
educator and coach at Hope, in addition to serving as the
college's first director of athletics.
The van der Velde award is presented to a senior man for
outstanding contribution to the college in athletics, scholarship
and participation in student activities. The award, presented
annually since 1932, is named in memory of Dr. Otto van der
Velde, a 1915 Hope College graduate who lettered in four sports
and was later a team physician for more than 40 years.
A special education major, Brower was captain of both the
volleyball and basketball teams. She achieved All-MIAA honors
for two years in volleyball. She achieved Dean's List
recognition all four years and was a four-time MIAA Academic
Honor Roll honoree. She was also named the 2001 recipient of the
Alvin W. Vanderbush Student-Athlete Award. A 1997
graduate of Hamilton High School, she is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Randy (Cyndy) Brower of Hamilton.
A business major, Boss was a national champion breaststroke
swimmer. He became just the sixth swimmer in NCAA Division III
history to win a national championship in the same event four
consecutive years, capturing the 200-yard from his freshman
through senior year. He also won the national title in the 100-
yard breaststroke three of his four years. He ended his career
an NCAA All-American 17 times. A 1998 graduate of Jenison High
School, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy (Deb) Boss of
Jenison.
