Sports Medicine Lecture Series
Plans Five Addresses for 2003-04

HOLLAND -- The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will present five addresses during the 2003-04 school year.

The series, which will feature a variety of topics, is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Holland Community Hospital, GRSportsCenter and the college.

All lectures begin at 7 p.m., and will be presented either at the college or at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids. Admission is free.

The series will open on Wednesday, Sept. 10, with "Butt & Gut: Developing Core Stability in Athletes," by Jolene Bennett of Rehabilitation Resources of Grand Rapids. On Monday, Oct. 27, Dr. David Janda of the Institute for Preventative Sports Medicine in Ann Arbor will present "The Politics of Prevention: Breaking Down the Barriers." On Tuesday, Nov. 4, Dr. Craig Horswill of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute of Barrington, Ill., will present "Risks and Benefits of Nutritional Supplementation in Athletes."

The series will continue in the spring semester on Monday, Feb. 2, with "Advances in the Management of the Unstable Glenohumeral Joint: Implications for Rehabilitation," by Dr. Thomas Matelic of Orthopaedic Associates of Grand Rapids. The series will conclude for the season on Tuesday, April 13, with "Prevention, Recognition, and Treatment of Exertional Heat Illness" by Dr. Douglas Casa of the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

The opening lecture on Wednesday, Sept. 10, and the Monday, Feb. 2, lecture will be presented at Mary Free Bed Hospital, 235 Wealthy, S.E. in Grand Rapids. The Monday, Oct. 27, Tuesday, Nov. 4, and Tuesday, April 13, lectures will be presented in the Maas Center at Hope College, located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street in Holland.
