JANUARY
Provost's Award Honored Two Professors -- James Allis and Richard Ray were presented the Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching. click

Towsley Research Scholars Named -- Claudini Polini and Charlotte van Oyen Witvliet have been named the Towsley Research Scholars. click

FEBRUARY
Student Research Supported by Grant -- A grant from the Mabel and Arnold Beckman Foundation of California will support student research. click

Faculty Mentoring Model Supported by Grant -- Dr. Caroline Simon, chair of the department of philosophy, will lead a project to develop models for mentoring new faculty at Christian colleges. The "Mentoring Models Initiative" is funded through a grant from the Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts. click

MARCH
Students Won Model League of Arab States Honors -- Hope students won a variety of honors during the Michigan Model League of Arab States. click

Changes Made in Summer Sessions Format -- The length of the college's three summer sessions have been changed. click

Mission Trips Attracted Students -- More than 300 Hope students participated in mission trips during their spring break. click

Student Publications Honored -- Two student publications have been honored -- the anchor newspaper and The Milestone yearbook.

Children Benefited from First Dance Marathon -- More than $23,000 was raised by Hope students for the Children's Miracle Network through a dance marathon. click

Professor's Book Focused On Well-Being Since 1960, Americans have been soaring materially and, until recently, sinking socially, according to a book by Dr. David Myers of the psychology faculty. click

Swimmers Excelled at Nationals -- Hope's swimming teams again excelled at the NCAA Division III championships with both the Flying Dutch and the Flying Dutchmen finishing sixth. Sophomore Josh Boss and junior Betsy VandenBerg each captured the gold medal in the 200-yard breaststroke at their respective national championships.

APRIL
Record Group of Faculty Retired -- Thirteen members of the faculty with a combined service to Hope of more than 360 years retired at the conclusion of the school year. click

Senior Class Presented H.O.P.E Award -- The 36th recipient of the H.O.P.E. Award as the college's outstanding professor was Graham Peaslee of the chemistry faculty. click

MAY
Hope at Forefront in Student Research -- Grants from the National Science Foundation for summer student research again put Hope at the top among liberal arts colleges. click

Research of Psych Students Honored -- The research of Hope students studying psychology was honored. click

Golfers Competed at Nationals -- For the first time in school history, Hope qualified golfers for both the men's and women's NCAA championships.

JUNE
Netherlands Honored Senior Fellow -- Robert Swierenga, a senior research fellow with the college's A.C. Van Raalte Institute, was named a "Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. click

Video Captured Ancient Craft -- The ancient art of created parchment is chronicled in a video co-directed by Dr. Neal Sobania of the history faculty. click

JULY
New Sculpture Added to Campus -- A life-sized bronze figure depicting a seated young woman engaged in reflection was unveiled. click

Nursing Professor Honored -- Tamara George of the nursing faculty was presented the Michigan "Excellence in Research Award." click

AUGUST
Hope Named a "Best Buy" -- Hope was one of only 40 colleges in the U.S. to be named a "Best Buy" by the respected "Fiske Guide to Colleges 2001.click

Engineering Degree Received Accreditation -- The Bachelor of Science in Engineering program received national accreditation on its first attempt. click

Swimmer Competed in Olympic Trials -- Sophomore Josh Boss stepped into the nation's elite swimming circle as he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials. click

SEPTEMBER
Enrollment Reached Alltime High -- Enrollment has surpassed 3,000 students for the first time in school history. click

OCTOBER
English Prof Won National Poetry Award -- A collection of poems by Susan Atefat Peckham, assistant professor of English, was selected a winner of the prestigious National Poetry Series award. click

Librarian Honored for Excellence -- Linda Linklater of the library staff was presented the first "Award of Excellence" from the Michigan Library Association click

College Launched Capital Campaign -- Hope launched its largest, most far-reaching single fund raising effort in the college's history. The $85 million campaign, "Legacies: A Vision of Hope," will support projects ranging from the construction of two major academic buildings, to the renovation of several existing buildings, to building Hope's endowment. click



Physicist Receives National Research Award -- Paul DeYoung of the physics faculty received recognition from the American Physical Society for outstanding research and mentoring undergraduate students. click

NOVEMBER
Poem Honored by National Publication -- A poem by arts librarian Priscilla Atkins was named "Poem of the Month" by the "Chrstian Science Monitor." click

Provost Announced Retirement Plans -- Provost Jacob Nyenhuis announced his intentions to retire at the conclusion of the current school year. click

DECEMBER
Research Supported by NASA Grant -- A grant from NASA will support the research of Janice Pawloski of the engineering faculty. click

Building Project Supported by Grant -- A $750,000 grant from the Towsley Foundation of Midland, Mich. will support the project to renovate and expand the college's science center. click
