JANUARY
Faculty Achievement Award - Maxine DeBruyn of the dance faculty received the college's first Ruth and John Reed Faculty Achievement Award. The award recognizes a member of the faculty who is a superior teacher and has also contributed significantly in some other area of professional life. (1/8/01)
Provost's Award Honors History Professor - History professor William Cohen was named the recipient of the college's "Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching." (1/8/01)
Towsley Research Scholar is English Professor - Dr. Julie Costello, assistant professor of English, was named a "Towsley Research Scholar" at Hope. Through the program, newer Hope faculty members receive support for a project for four years. (1/8/01)
Hope Hosts Collegiate Honor Band - Hope College was host to the Michigan Intercollegiate Honors Band. The concert featured the talents of student musicians from eight Michigan colleges and universities. (1/26/01)
Longest Winning Streak in Hope Athletic History - The longest winning streak in Hope athletic history was recorded by the women's swimming team which won its 49th consecutive conference dual meet. (1/31/01)
FEBRUARY
Professor's Paintings Exhibited in Queretaro - An exhibition of paintings by professor Del Michel were displayed in Queretaro, Mexico. The show, "Imagenes Liricas" featured 23 paintings. (2/14/01)
Hope Student is Truman Scholarship Finalist - Matt Scogin, a Hope junior from Portage, Mich., was named a finalist for the national Harry S. Truman Scholarship. It was the second year in a row that a Hope student was named a finalist. (2/19/01)
Social Work Program's Accreditation Reaffirmed - The Council on Social Work Education reaffirmed the accreditation of the Hope College Social Work Program. The program was initially accredited in 1997. The reaffirmation will stand for another eight years. 2/19/01
Award Supports Collaborative Research Experience - A three-year grant from the Merck Company Foundation was presented to Hope to support interdisciplinary summer research experiences in biology and chemistry. (2/26/01)

Dance Marathon a Success - More than $37,000 was contributed to the Children's Miracle Network through the 2nd annual all-campus Dance Marathon. Photo Gallery
Conference Examines Science Education Partnerships - A national group of high school and college faculty that creates school-college partnerships in science education met at Hope to consider the future of such ventures. (3/2/01)
Hope Students Spend Spring Break on Service Trips - More than 300 Hope College students spent their spring break helping others. The students participated in 23 service projects that took them throughout the United States as well as to Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America. (3/5/01)
National Champions Crowned in Swimming - The NCAA Division III national champions in the breaststroke hailed from Hope. Betsy VandenBerg repeated as the nation's top swimmer in the 200-yard breaststroke while Josh Boss was named the NCAA Division III male swimmer of the year as he won both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke.
Students Achieve in Computer Science Research Contest - A team of researchers consisting of students from Hope and Xavier University of Ohio placed second in the ACM International Student Research Contest. Their project compared methods of using the computer to handle institutional course scheduling. (3/06/01)
James Gentile Receives National Award For Research Excellence - James Gentile, Dean for the Natural Sciences, received the Alexander Hollaender Award for excellence North American Environmental Mutagen Society. The award recognizes general research excellence, research excellence focused in the area of environmental mutagenesis and the protection of human health, and outstanding contributions in educating students. Gift Provides Hope Leadership Role in Building Spectator Facility - Hope was named the intended recipient of a $7.5 million anchor gift from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation to serve as a catalyst to enable the college to assume a leadership role in addressing some of the spectator facility needs of the college and Holland community. APRIL
Hope Honors Acclaimed Writer - Acclaimed writer Maya Angelou was presented an honorary Doctor of Letters degree during a campus visit. (4/3/01)
Award Recognizes Professor's Service to Students - History professor Marc Baer was named the recipient of the college's second annual "Vanderbush-Weller Development Fund" award. The award recognizes and supports the efforts of Hope faculty and staff who make extraordinary contributions to the lives of students. (4/9/01)
Senior Finalist in Opera Competition - Senior Greg Frens of Grand Rapids, Mich. was named a finalist in the 2001 Palm Beach Opera "Anton Guadagno Vocal Competition." The competition drew singers from throughout the United States and Canada. Frens was one of only 22 finalists for singers age 18-23. (4/11/01)
J. Jeffery Tyler Named Hope's Outstanding Professor Educator - Dr. J. Jeffery Tyler of the religion faculty was presented the 37th annual "Hope Outstanding Professor Educator" (H.O.P.E.) award by the 2001 graduating class. The award, first given in 1965, is presented by the graduating class to the professor who they feel epitomizes the best qualities of the Hope College educator. (4/26/01)
MAY
Class of 2001 Numbers 600 - The college's 136th commencement was highlighted with the presentation of degrees to over 600 seniors. 5/6/01 The Commencement address Survivor was presented by Maura Reynolds, director of advising.
Honorary Degrees Awarded at Commencement - The college awarded three honorary degrees during Commencement exercises. The honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree was presented to Leonard and Marjorie Maas and the Doctor of Letters degree to retiring provost Jacob E. Nyenhuis. (5/6/01)
College Embarks of New Nursing Program - The college announced that its nursing education program will continue even after a long-running joint program ends. Offered jointly with Calvin College since 1982, Hope's nursing program will begin operating independently in 2003. (5/7/01)
Golfer Honored as National Freshman of the Year - Freshman Lacey Wicksall was voted the national Division III freshman player of the year by the College Golf Coaches Association. 5/16/01
Professor Writings Honored Nationally -English professor Jack Ridl won the 2001 "Letterpress Chapbook Competition" sponsored by the Center for Book Arts of New York City. His winning collection, "Against Elegies," will be published in a limited-edition chapbook. (5/7/01)
Hope Sweeps MIAA All-Sports Awards - Hope swept all three all-sports awards of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for the 2000-01 school year. 11/25/01
JUNE-JULY
Kim Grotenhuis Becomes Most Decorated Academic All-American - Kim Grotenhuis capped her brilliant collegiate career by becoming the first Hope athlete in school history to be named a first-team Verizon Academic All-American three times. 6/8/01
Richard Ray Honored by National Athletic Trainers' Association - Dr. R. Richard Ray Jr. received the highest honor for an athletic training educator from the National Athletic Trainers' Association. (6/1/01)
Stephen Hemenway Presented Distinguished Service - Dr. Stephen I. Hemenway of the English faculty has been recognized for his quarter century as leader of the college's Vienna Summer School. Hemenway has led the Vienna Summer School since 1976. (6/14/01)
Grant Supports Student-Faculty Research - A $100,000 grant from the McGregor Fund of Detroit will provide additional opportunities for Hope students to conduct original research. The award will support collaborative research between students and faculty in the arts, humanities and social sciences. (6/12/01)
AUGUST
College Launches 140th Academic Year - The college's 140th academic year was formally launched with a convocation. (8/26/01)
Tree Planting Marks 50th Year of Foundation - In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Michigan Colleges Foundation (MCF), Hope dedicated a red maple tree to recognize its long-standing affiliation. (8/27/01)

September 11 Attacks Touch Hope Family - In the aftermath of the devastating attacks of 11 September, the members of the Hope campus family came together to shed tears, share prayers, and travel in community the uncertainty that followed. (9/11/01) Photo Gallery
Alumnus Killed at World Trade Center - David Pruim, a 1970 Hope graduate who lettered in football, was among those killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. 9/22/01
Enrollment Includes Record Number of First-Timers - A record number of first-time students helped boost overall enrollment at Hope to the second highest total in the college's history. 9/11/01

NSF Grant Supports Neutron Detector Project - The National Science Foundation awarded a grant to Hope College as part of a coalition of 10 colleges and universities building a highly efficient large-area neutron detector, the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA). (10/5/01)

Legacies: A Vision of Hope is having a far-reaching impact, providing support campus-wide for immediate and future needs. The capital campaign had achieved nearly $64 million of its $85 goal as the calendar year drew to a close. (12/31/01)
