JANUARY
Faculty Achievement Awards - Hope College presented awards honoring teaching, service and scholarship to six faculty during the annual recognition luncheon. Dr. Barry L. Bandstra and Dr. Herbert L. Dershem received the Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Other honorees: Dr. Lorna Hernandez Jarvis, Ruth and John Reed Faculty Achievement Award; Dr. Susan Atefat Peckham, Towsley Research Scholar; Dr. Miguel De La Torre, research award from the Faculty Faith and Learning Fund and Dr. Jesse Montaņo, Sluyter Fellowship for research. Haworth Inn Celebrates Anniversity - The Haworth Inn and Conference Center marked its fifth anniversary. (1/15/02)
Upward Bound Director Honored - Elizabeth Colburn, director of the TRIO Upward Bound program at Hope College, received the 2001 "Social Justice Award in Education" from the City of Holland Human Relations Commission. (1/23/02)
James Boelkins Appointed Provost - Alumnus James Boelkins has been appointed Hope's chief academic officer. (1/24/02)
Legacies Campaign Goal Increased - The progress of the initial fund-raising efforts for the "Legacies: A Vision of Hope" capital campaign led to an increase in the goal from $85 to $105 million. (1/30/02)
Smithsonian Exhibit Features Research - A Hope professor and student played leadership roles in developing an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Prof. Neal Sobania and junior Daniel Berhanemeskel of Aksum, Ethiopia, were centrally involved in developing "From Monastery to Marketplace: Tradition Inspires Modern Ethiopian Painting." (1/31/02)

Access to Grad School Enhanced - The announcement of new agreement between Hope College and Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant enhances access to graduate school for Hope students interested in careers in physical therapy. (2/5/02)
Professors Gain National Recognition - Two professors received national recognition for their work. Jack Ridl of the English faculty was the winner of the 2002 "Say the Word" poetry competition sponsored by The Writers' Center of the Ellipse Art Center in Arlington, Va. (2/11/02) The book "For the Beauty of the Earth" by Dr. Steven Bouma-Prediger of the religion faculty won an "Award of Merit" from "Christianity Today" in the theology/ethics category of the magazine's "2002 Book Awards" program. Professors Author Books - Two professors have authored books. Dr. Allen Verhey of the religion faculty is the author of "Remembering Jesus: Christian Community, Scripture, and the Moral Life." (2/5/02) Dr. Fred L. Johnson III of the history faculty is the author of the novel "Bittersweet." 2/14/02
Professors Announce Retirement Plan - Four professors with a cumulative total of 109 years of service will retire at the end of the school year. (2/8/02)
Foundation Grants Benefits Student Research - Hope receives a third consecutive award for student research from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation of Irvine, Calif. Hope is one of only five liberal arts colleges nationwide to receive a "Beckman Scholar Award" for 2002. (2/21/02)
Education Department Receives National Honor - The college's department of education received one of only six "Distinguished Achievement Awards" nationwide for effectively blending technology into the college's teacher education program. (2/27/02)
MARCH
Spring Break Draws Student to Service - More than 360 Hope students will spend their spring break helping others. The students will be participating in 24 service projects that will take them throughout the United States as well as to Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America. (3/4/02)
Josh Boss Repeats as National Swimming Champion - Senior Josh Boss of Jenison, Mich. successfully defended national titles in the breaststroke events as the Flying Dutchmen finished fifth at the NCAA Division III championships.0 3/25/02
Winter Sports Roundup
Senior Among Top College-Student Organists - Senior Susan DeKam of Caledonia, Mich. placed second nationally in the collegiate organ performance competition sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association. (3/26/02)
Professor Heads National Commission - Maura Reynolds, Hope's director of academic advising, is named to chair the Small Colleges and Universities Commission of the National Academic Advising Association. (3/27/02)
Athletic Trainers Honor Richard Ray - Dr. R. Richard Ray Jr. was presented the "Distinguished Service Award" from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association for demonstrated excellence in management or leadership. (3/29/02)
Grant Support Tropical Plant Research -
Dr. Timothy Evans of the biology faculty is awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to study the pineapple family in South America, a project that he hopes will ultimately help enhance understanding of how a variety of tropical species interrelate. (3/19/02)
APRIL
Senior Receives Fellowship - Senior Lora Van Uffelen of Holland, Mich. received a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. (4/10/02)
Engineering Department Enters Alliance - Pfizer Global Research and Development in Holland, Mich., and Hope's engineering program at Hope College, also in Holland, entered into a "strategic alliance" that will give Hope students a chance to apply their lessons to helping a local company with a real-life design problem. (4/17/02)
Professor Seeks to Help Aircraft Survive Explosions - As society works to make commercial flying safer in the post-Sept. 11 world, a Hope professor's research prompted by an earlier tragedy took on added relevance. Dr. Roger Veldman, assistant professor of engineering, is studying how to help airplanes better withstand internal explosions. His work received support through a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration as part of the FAA's support of research into methods to counteract terrorist activities. (4/22/02)
H.O.P.E. Award Announced - Ronald Wotlhuis of the education faculty is honored as Hope's Outstanding Professor-Educator. (4/25/02)

Science Center Groundbreaking Ceremony The campus community gathers for the Science Center groundbreaking ceremony. (4/25/02)
Alumni Association Honors Four - The Alumni Association presents four graduates Distinguished Alumni Awards. The honorees are Bruce Neckers '65, William Poppink '37, and Dr. Robert D. Visscher '51 and Marjorie Visscher '53. (4/15/02)
Class of 2002 Numbers 607 - The college's 137th Commencement honored 607 graduates from graduates from throughout the United States and from foreign nations including Belgium, Bosnia, Cyprus, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Japan, Kenya, Nepal, the Netherlands and South Africa. (5/5/02) The Commencement address was presented by Ronald Wolthuis of the education faculty.
Hope Sweeps MIAA All-Sports Awards - Hope successfully defended the Commissioner's Cup and men's and women's All-Sports championships of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. (5/15/02)
Neuroscience Program Blends Disciplines - A growing program at Hope finds its focus in the blurring boundaries of science. The college is developing a concentration in neuroscience, which blends traditionally-independent disciplines including biology, chemistry and psychology in studying the brain. A grant from the National Science Foundation is helping the college create a laboratory course to complement a lecture section. (5/22/02)

Hope Hosts National College Technology Confab - Representatives of liberal arts colleges from around the country met at Hope to consider the use of information technology as a learning tool. (6/13/02)
Faculty Authors Publish Works - Members of the faculty have published varied works. Dr. Peter J. Schakel of the English faculty is author of "Imagination and the Arts in C.S. Lewis: Journeying to Narnia and Other Worlds." (6/19/02) "Phantoms of a Blood-Stained Period: The Complete Civil War Writings of Ambrose Bierce," is co-edited by Dr. David Klooster of the English faculty. (6/26/02) Jackie Bartley of the English faculty is the author of "Bloodroot," a book of poetry. (5/24/02)
Foundry Acquisition Shapes Eastern Gateway Project - Hope took a major step in the proposed development of its eastern gateway project by finalizing the purchase of the former Western Foundry Company building at the corner of 8th Street and Fairbanks Avenue. (6/27/02)
DeVos Fieldhouse Project Unveiled - The college's effort to build a multi- purpose spectator facility enters a new phase with the college seeking local support for the project, which is being planned with community use in mind. (7/9/02)
Retired Provost Heads Van Raalte Institute - Dr. Jacob E. Nyenhuis, who retired as the college's achief academic officer in 2001, is named director of the college's A.C. Van Raalte Institute. (6/26/02)
Professor's Work is Finalist in Fiction Competition - The book "Georgia Under Water" by Dr. Heather Sellers of the English faculty is named a finalist in the 2002 "Paterson Fiction Prize" competition. (7/9/02)
Hope Recognized for Fund Raising Program - Hope College received national recognition for its fund-raising program. The college was presented a 2002 "Circle of Excellence in Educational Fund-Raising Award" for overall improvement from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. (7/1/02)
Professorship in Dance Announced -
Dance Department founder Maxine DeBruyn was appointed to the college's Dorothy Wiley DeLong Professorship in Dance. (7/26/02)
Professor Develops Web-Based Course on Biblical Hebrew - Dr. Barry Bandstra religion faculty wants to give away what he knows, to anyone who's interested. Bandstra is developing "Reading Hebrew," a Web-based course that he intends to make available for free. He hopes to make it easier for others to learn biblical Hebrew by providing a resource for colleagues at other institutions and even individual students. (8/7/02)
Faculty Authors Publish Books - Books published by faculty authors have varied topics. Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre of the religion faculty is author of "The Quest for the Cuban Christ: A Historical Search." De La Torre reasons that for all Cubans, Christ must be understood through the historical analysis of Cuban culture. (8/8/02) In his new book "Intuition: Its Powers and Perils," psychology professor David Myers considers psychology's take on the "voice within," giving attention to a mix of topics ranging from first impressions, to the fear of flying, playing the lottery, shooting streaks in basketball and choosing stocks. (8/15/02) The award-winning poetry collection "Against Elegies" by Jack Ridl of English faculty is in its second edition. (8/28/02) Not only producers but also "consumers" of research are intended to benefit from "Research Methods in Psychology," a textbook co-authored by Dr. John Shaughnessy of the psychology faculty and recently published in a sixth edition. SEPTEMBER
Hope Sets Enrollment Record - Hope enrolls a record number of students for the 2002-03 school year, topping 3,000 students for the second time in the college's history. (9/10/02)
Hope Prof Part of National Effort to Shape Biology Teaching - From among all the liberal arts colleges in the country, it was Hope College alone that made a direct contribution to a report of the National Academy of Sciences designed to improve biology instruction across the country in the coming years. (9/10/02)
Hope's Approach to Teaching Receives National Recognition - Hope is ranked among the top five colleges and universities in the nation in the "America's Best Colleges 2003" guide published by "U.S. News and World Report" for its success in teaching through active learning. (9/19/02)
Professor Named Michigan's "Outstanding Hispanic Educator" - Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre of the religion faculty was named the 2002 recipient of the "Outstanding Hispanic Educator" award by the Michigan Hispanic Legislative Caucus. (9/24/02)

Published Works Cap Active Year for Faculty -
The year 2002 will be remembered as the Year of Published Works by members of the Hope faculty. Dr. Albert Bell Jr. of the history faculty applied his interest in ancient history to his latest mystery novel, "All Roads Lead to Murder," setting the action in the Roman Empire. (10/2/02) When the first edition of his book "The U.S. Supreme Court and the Electoral Process" was published in the early fall of 2000, Dr. David Ryden of the political science faculty never imagined that the second edition would include as dramatic a new example as "Bush v. Gore." (10/7/02) "Drinking Girls and Their Dresses," a book of poetry by Dr. Heather Sellers of the English faculty, has been likened to a coming-of-age story. (10/8/02)
When it comes to helping students succeed in college, Dr. Scott VanderStoep of the psychology faculty wrote the book, "Learning to Learn: The Skill and Will of College Success." (10/14/02)
Book Examines Hope Sports History from 1955 to 1970 - Author Gordon Brewer not only researched his latest history of sports at Hope College, but lived it. Brewer is the author of "Journey of Hope: Names and Games Remembered, A History of Intercollegiate Athletics at Hope College -- 1955-1970." (10/7/02)
Grant Supports Research in Blood Cell Development - Dr. Michael J. Pikaart of the chemistry faculty receives support for research that could ultimately have implications for the treatment of blood diseases. (10/8/02)
Music Professor Honored for Service - Roberta Kraft of the music faculty received the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Music Teachers Association. (10/14/02)

Book by Examines History of the Dutch in Chicago - Dr. Robert Swierenga of the A.C. Van Raalte Institute explores a topic especially close to home in his latest book, a history of the Dutch in greater Chicagoland. (11/15/02)
Professors Edit Poetry Anthology - Peter Schakel and Jack Ridl of the English faculty are editors of "250 Poems: A Portable Anthology." The book is a collection of poems, arranged chronologically, from medieval English ballads to works by recent American poets laureate. (11/26/02)
Grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. Supports Exploration of Vocation - A $2 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. will enhance Hope's role in helping students to consider the role of vocation or calling in their lives. (11/27/02)
