Faculty Achievement Awards - Hope College presented awards honoring teaching, service and scholarship to eight faculty during the annual recognition luncheon. Read
Documentary on the Americas - Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre of the religion faculty was part of a team of scholars developing a PBS documentary on the Americas. Read
A Man Finds His Way - A novel by Dr. Fred L. Johnson III, assistant professor of history, was viewed as a thoughtful take on some tough contemporary issues in job politics and race relations. Read
Outstanding Undergraduate Award - Senior Alex Sherstov of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, was named a finalist in the national Outstanding Undergraduate Award program of the Computing Research Association. Read
Classical Myth Examined - A book decades in the making by retired provost Jacob Nyenhuis examined a British artist's long-time fascination with a Classical myth thousands of years old. Read
FEBRUARY
Another Side of the Super Bowl - Holland-area viewers on Superbowl Sunday liked the one about the Federal Express guy. With football's biggest event also serving as advertising's biggest showcase, a Hope communications class set out to see how marketers scored with the local audience. Read
Dutch Contemporary Art Featured - An exhibition featuring work by four contemporary artists who are engaging with the Dutch tradition was featured in the gallery of the De Pree Art Center. Read
Staff Members Honored for Service - Yolanda Vega of Upward Bound and John Yelding of the education faculty were presented Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Awards. Read

Winter Sports Roundup
Carnegie Hall Encore Performance - Pianist Mihai Craioveanu presented an encore concert at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. Read
A Time to Serve - Nearly 400 students spent their spring break helping others by participating in service projects throughout the United States as well as to the Caribbean and Latin America. Read
Kresge Challenge - The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Mich. approved an $850,000 challenge grant as an incentive for completing the funding of the college's new science center. Read
Hope Hosts Michigan Academy - Hope hosted academicians from around the state and beyond for the 2003 meetings of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters. Read
Gift Enhances Book Collection - The gift of more than 4,500 books from the estate of art scholar Richard Wunder has given Hope one of the finest college art history collections in the Midwest. Read
Goldwater Scholar Named - Junior Andrew Huisman was presented a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for the 2003-04 academic year. It is the sixth time in seven years that a Hope student has received the scholarship. Read
APRIL
Composition Honors Parents - A composition commissioned by three brothers - all Hope alumni - in honor of their parents was featured during a concert by the combined Chapel Choir and College Chorus. Read
Faculty Retirements Announced - Three members of the faculty with 80 years service to the college announced their retirement -- Dr. Anne Irwin, professor of kinesiology, athletic director for women and director of intramural sports; Del Michel, professor of art; and David Zwart, associate professor of education. Historic Victory - The men's tennis team scores an historic victory over rival Kalamazoo. Read
State Honors in Music - Hope students earned multiple honors during the statewide National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Audition. Read
Music Teacher of the Year - Faculty member Roberta Kraft was named the "Teacher of the Year" by the Michigan Music Teachers Association. Read
Students Excel in Math - For the second consecutive year, a Hope student team won the Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition. Read

H.O.P.E. Award - Sociology professor Donald Luidens was honored by graduating seniors as Hope's Outstanding Professor Educator. Read

Honorary Degrees Recognizes Service - Two alumni -- Connie Hinga Boersma and the late Max Boersma -- were honored for their service to the college with the presentation of honorary degrees at Commencement. Read
Commencement Address - Reflecting on the national challenges of the present, Commencement speaker Dr. Fred Johnson called for courage, and offered as a model the resolve that overcame the challenges of the past. Read

Grants Support Undergraduate Research - Hope was presented five grants for summer student research from the National Science Foundation's "Research Experiences for Undergraduates" (NSF- REU) program, more than any other liberal arts college in the country.Read
Elvis is Calculus Natural - You may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but you can get him to solve a calculus problem. That's what math professor Tim Pennings realized when he took his Welsh Corgi, Elvis, for an outing to Lake Michigan to play fetch with his favorite tennis ball. (Read)
Sifting Through Dune History - Professor Ed Hansen of the geology and environmental science faculty is taking the long view of sand dune movement, tracking the way they've behaved for the past 5,000 years. Read
Upward Bound Support Sustained - Hope's long-running Upward Bound Program received a five-year renewal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Read
All-Sports Champions - Hope wins record 25th Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) All-Sports championship. Read
JUNE
Scholarships for Women in Science - A grant from the Henry Luce Foundation Inc. of New York City provides scholarships and summer research experiences for women majoring in the physical sciences. Read
Mentoring New Faculty - A book by Dr. Caroline Simon of the philosophy faculty addresses a topic close to home: the mentoring of new faculty at church-related colleges. Read
Book an Award-Winner - The book "Reading the Bible from the Margins" by Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre of the religion faculty received a first-place award from the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada. Read
Lilly Program Director - David Cunningham, an experienced scholar and educator, is hired to direct the college's new "Lilly Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation." Read
Book on Top Ten List - The book "Remembering Jesus: Christian Community, Scripture, and the Moral Life" by Dr. Allen Verhey of the religion faculty was chosen one of the "Top Ten Books for Parish Ministry" published in 2002. Read

Spotlight on Academe
Book Exposes Stereotypes - Through his book, "Culture and Customs of Kenya," Dr. Neal Sobania of the history faculty helped readers see beyond stereotypes and discover the African nation he has studied for nearly three decades. Read
Researching Global Climate Change - Hope biology researchers are modeling changes in the global climate, hoping to better understand just what the world can expect as carbon dioxide levels continue to climb. Read
Grant Supports Research - A grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) provides Hope with a major resource for joint student-faculty research across multiple departments, and puts the college in rare company that includes national research laboratories. Read

Global Experiences - A grant helps Hope develop internship experiences
in Germany for students in engineering. Hope is the only liberal arts college

Book Relates Beliefs to Issues - Dr. Scott VanderStoep of the psychology faculty edits book that considers how Christian belief relates to contemporary issues in psychological research. Read
Joel Bouwens Heads Trustees - A tradition of leadership well-acquainted with Hope College continues with the election of Joel Bouwens as chairperson of the Board of Trustees. Read
Campus Changes Greet Students - Every member of the campus community is affected by changes to Hope's physical plant that occurred prior to the new school year. Read
SEPTEMBER
Time to Serve - Some 500 Hope College students wparticipate in service projects throughout the area through the college’s "Time to Serve". Read
Grant is College's Largest - A major grant from the National Science Foundation involves multiple college departments in exploring the roles that fungi play in the ecosystem. It is the largest research award ever to Hope from the NSF. Read
Hope Joins National Tuition Plan - Hope College becomes a founding member of “Independent 529 Plan,” a new national prepaid college tuition plan tailored specifically for private colleges. Read
Enrollment is Hope Record - Hope has enrolled a record number of students (3,068) for the second year in a row, a total that includes its largest freshman class. Read
Book is Gold Award Winner - Dr. David S. Cunningham, professor of religion and director of The CrossRoads Project, received a first-place "Gold Award" for Religion in “ForeWord Magazine's” 2002 Book Awards. Read
Professor Honored for Mentoring - Professor William Polik is honored during the "Excellence in Undergraduate Chemical Research Symposium" at Indiana University in Bloomington Read

Honored as Science Fellow - Dr. James Gentile, dean for the natural sciences, is elected a Fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, one of the highest honors that the association can bestow upon a scientist. Read
Jesus and the Gospels - A textbook co-authored by Dr. Phillip Munoa III of the religion faculty considers Jesus and the Gospels both as a field of study and in the context of history. Read
State Honors in Dance - Dawn McIlhargey-Wigert of the dance faculty wins the statewide Maggie Allesee New Choreography Award. Read

Self-reinvention is U.S. Culture - In autobiographical accounts from an earlier era, Dr. William Pannapacker of English faculty finds a link to the present: self-reinvention in U.S. culture is nothing new. Read
Tops in Match - A Hope student team wins the 2003 statewide Michigan Autumn Take Home (MATH) Challenge. Read
DECEMBER
Grant Supports Research - A grant supports the research of nursing professor Susan Dunn who is investigating the way hopelessness and depression may affect the recovery of patients who have suffered a heart attack. Read
Prestigious Fellowship Awarded - Chemistry professor William Polik received a prestigious fellowship award from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. Read
Heads National Organization - English professor John Cox is elected president of the Conference on Christianity and Literature (CCL). Read
