Book Explores Scientific Inquiry - A book by philosophy professor Joseph LaPorte examines the way that scientific inquiry refines the meaning of words, and how such changes in turn affect scientific inquiry. read
Documentary Revisits Homicide - A visit with local law enforcement led a Hope documentary class to investigate the unsolved abduction and murder of one of the college’s own a quarter century before. read
Green Light for Construction - The Board of Trustees approves the start of two major construction projects. read
FEBRUARY
NSF Summer Research Grant - The college's nuclear research group received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation’s Research in Undergraduate Institutions program. read
National Library Award - Van Wylen Library was named the national winner in the college category of the 2004 "Excellence in Academic Libraries Award" by the Association of College and Research Libraries. read
State Honor - Nursing professor Mary Scheerhorn received the statewide "Faculty Advisor Award from the Michigan Nursing Student Association. read

Innovative Teaching - Music professor Margaret Kennedy-Dygas is hoping to change the way that students learn about singing, first at Hope and then nationwide. read
New Dean of Chapel - The Rev. Trygve D. Johnson was appointed the Hinga-Boersma Dean of the Chapel effective January, 2005. read
Trainers Honor Professor -Richard Ray of the kinesiology faculty was awarded an "Outstanding Educator Award" from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association. read

Accreditation Continues - The college's accreditation through The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools was continued. read

Book Examines Faith-Based Initiatives - A book co-authored by Dr. David K. Ryden of the political science faculty considers the development and struggles of President George W. Bush’s effort to extend government funding to religious charitable groups. read

MAY
H.O.P.E. Award - Political science professor Joel Toppen was named the Hope Outstanding Professor Educator by members of the Class of 2004. read
Honorary Degrees - Honorary degrees were presented to J. Kermit Campbell and Danny R. Gaydou. read
Commencement Honors Graduates - Members of the Class of 2004 were encouraged to be daydreamers during the annual Commencement exercise. read
Honored for Service to Students - Associate provost Alfredo Gonzales was named recipient of the college's fifth annual "Vanderbush-Weller Development Fund" award for strong, positive impact on students. read
All-Sports Champion - Hope won the Commissioner's Cup of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. read
Professor's Book Honored - A book by Dr. James Herrick of the communication faculty earned recognition from two organizations that review Christian literature. read
Nursing Program Accredited - The new department of nursing received accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. read

Spring Sports Roundup - The spring season culminated a successful year in sport by Hope athletes. read
Dean Accepts New Position - Natural sciences dean James Gentile was appointed president of Research Corporation of Tucson, Ariz. read
Grant Provides Scholarships - A National Science Foundation grant provides scholarships to encourage students to study computer science, engineering or mathematics. read
International Education Honored - National recognition of Hope's international education program includes a scholarship for a student to use in studying abroad. read
New Home - The Joint Archives of Holland and Van Raalte Institute have a new home. read
College Anticipates New School Year -
When Hope students arrived on campus they observed several major construction projects that caused an active summer on campus. read
Convocation Launches School Year - It’s likely that the Opening Convocation address began and ended unlike any other at Hope. Speakers Dr. Stephen Hemenway and Dr. Jennifer Young preceded their remarks by blowing bubbles. And they concluded by having those in the audience do the "wave." read
SEPTEMBER
Professor Publishes - Religion professor Miguel De La Torre authored or edited three books that explore topics in religion. read
Book Donations Enhances Library - Being in the right place at the right time helped land Hope a major addition to the Van Wylen Library’s collection -- 4,900 volumes concerning Dutch, Japanese and Chinese history. read
Enrollment High - The 2004-05 school year includes a record-high enrollment. read
Literature Anthology - English professors Peter Schakel and Jack Ridl co-authored a literature anthology for the 21st Century. read
Professor Honored - Music professor Charles Aschbrenner was named the 2004 "Teacher of the Year" by the Holland Piano Teachers’ Forum. read
A Book for Children - A children’s book co-authored by English professor Heather Sellers features two real-life canine protagonists in a fictional tale. read
OCTOBER
Tradition Renewed - The Class of 2007 won the Pull tug-of-war in the 105th renewal of one of America's greatest college traditions.

Grant Supports Science Center - A $250,000 federal grant contributes to the construction and renovation of the college’s science center. read
