JANUARY

  • Professors Susan Cherup and William Polik were named recipients of the college's "Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching." (1/11/99)

  • Matthew Elrod was named the college's third "Towsley Research Scholar" as part of an on-going program to support the research of newer faculty members. (1/11/99)

    FEBRUARY

  • J. Jeffery Tyler of the religion faculty received an award through the Fulbright Senior Scholar Program. (2/23/99)

  • Longtime music professor Robert Ritsema is honored with a Meritorious Service Award by the Alumni Association. (2/24/99)

    MARCH

  • The Lifetime Achievement Award of the West Michigan Sports Awards was presented to Ray Smith, director of men's athletics. (3/1/99)

  • The Midwest District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance honored Maxine DeBruyn, professor of dance, for the advancement of her profession. (3/2/99)

  • For the eleventh year in-a-row, Hope students won "Best Delegation" honors during the Midwest Model League of Arab States. (3/4/99)

  • A prestigious fellowship, just one of 12 awarded nationally, is presented to junior Annalise Van Wyngarden of Caledonia, Mich. for the study of the fundamental of nuclear science and its applications to nuclear medicine and related fields. (3/17/99)

  • Freshman Josh Boss is national swimming champion in two events. (3/22/99)

    APRIL

  • English professor Stephen Hemenway was one of 64 scholars from around the world to be presented an award for innovative excellence in teaching, learning and technology. (4/21/99)

  • Six members of the Hope faculty retired at the conclusion of the school year. (4/21/99)

  • Steven Bouma-Prediger was presented the 35th annual H.O.P.E. award as the college's outstanding professor educator. (4/29/99)

    MAY

  • Professor Jose Alfredo Zepeda Garrido, rector of the Autonomous University of Queretaro in Mexico, was presented a Distinguished Service Award. (5/3/99)

  • Hope's 590 graduating seniors "sailed away" to their futures during Commencement exercises. (5/10/99)

  • Student mathematicians excelled at state and national competitions. (5/10/99)

  • Hope sweeps Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) all-sports awards. (5/13/99)

    JUNE/JULY/AUGUST

  • The department of theatre received a five-year renewal of its national accreditation. (6/2/99)

  • The on-going research of neutron stars by physics professor Peter Gonthier received support through a Research Corporation grant. (6/22/99)

  • A gift from the late Martha Miller will underwrite construction of a multi-purpose academic building. (6/30/99)

  • The presidency of Dr. John Jacobson concluded on June 30th. and the presidency of Dr. James Bultman began on July 1st.

  • Construction is underway on an addition to the music building providing a new center for organ instruction. (7/14/99)

  • Hope was singled out as a top school in several areas by the Kaplan Newsweek College Catalog 2000. (7/12/99)

  • Prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarships are presented to recent graduates Becky Schmidt and Becky Timmer. (7/22/99)

    SEPTEMBER

    DECEMBER

  • The Lilly Endowment awards Hope a planning grant to review approaches to blending faith perspective into the educational program. (11/30/99)

  • Professors Heather Sellers and Joseph LaPorte were presented prestigious national endowment fellowships. (12/20/99)
