New Student Advising Days
Monday, June 15 and Saturday, June 20

What is New Student Advising Day?

New Student Advising Day is an optional half day program for incoming first-year students and their families designed to:

  • facilitate a smooth class registration experience 
  • help prepare you for the academic transition to college
  • introduce you to academic advisors, other staff, and programs at Hope

Please note that both days will be identical and that you are encouraged to attend only one New Student Advising Day.


I RSVP'd for the event and received a confirmation e-mail in my Hope-inbox. Now what?

Check in is between 8 and 9am on Saturday. Check-in is located on the first floor of The DeWitt Student and Cultural Center, located on Columbia Ave between 10th and 13th street. There will be signs for parking and entrances to the building.

Please bring:
- Pen/Pencil
- Notebook
- Notes on course preferences
- some form of an ID, if possible, to fill out your Emergency Contact form
- Know your Hope College ID number and your password to KnowHopePlus

Light breakfast and complimentary lunch will be served.

Who Should Attend?
Any incoming first-year student who is interested in meeting with an academic advisor to discuss their course requests, as well as building relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

Your families are welcome as well!  Please note that younger siblings are very welcome to accompany parents, but we will only have specific programming geared toward incoming college students and parents.

Am I Required to Attend?  What Will I Miss if I Don’t Come? 
No.  This is an optional event designed to give you an opportunity to talk with an advisor in person.

I'd Like to Come, But I Can't
There are lots of other opportunities for you to be well informed and well connected!  We will send you all the registration information as well as various reminders and instructions every Tuesday through a "Tuesday Tidings" e-mail.  Additionally, if you have questions and cannot attend either of the New Student Advising Days, you can call (616-395-7882) and/or e-mail ( anytime this summer. 

Will I Miss Class Registration? How Do I Register for Classes?

No. All incoming students, whether or not they attend this event, will submit their class registration requests via an online form due by July 1. Registration information available here.

Is this Orientation?
No.  Orientation is an event attended by all new students beginning Friday, August 28.  New Student Advising Day is an event developed by the Orientation staff and the Registrar’s Office to provide an optional day focused on academic advising and class registration planning.

What Should I Expect?

  • A welcome from Provost Rich Ray
  • Introduction to academic advising and Hope’s curriculum to help you plan your fall schedule
  • Learning more about the academic transition and expectations at Hope
  • Meeting with faculty and upperclassmen to help answer your questions
  • A tasty lunch!

What Should I Bring?

  • Pen/Pencil
  • Notebook
  • Notes on course preferences after reading the Guide
  • Your questions regarding Registration and course selection
  • Memorize or bring a copy of your Hope Student ID number and your Hope e-mail address

The Schedule

The schedule for both events is identical.

  • 8am-9am: Event Check-in with light breakfast (arrive anytime between 8 and 9)
  • 9am-12:30pm: Advising and Registration Sessions for students and families (large group and small group)
  • 12:30pm-1:30pm: A complimentary lunch
  • 1:30pm: Optional campus tours

Is this event appropriate for transfer students

No, incoming transfer students should contact the Registrar's Office at 616-395-7760 or for an individual consultation regarding transfer registration.  New Student Advising Day is for incoming freshman students only.
