H03-1486. 1st (First) Air Commando Group
Records, 1943-2003. 14.50 linear ft.

Abstract

The collection of materials of the 1st Air Commando Group document a period of history of World War II as it developed in the China-Burma-India Theater in 1943 and 1944. It includes a substantial amount of material from the period, such as original rosters, official orders, and photographs of personnel and materials involved in the operation. Much of the material dates from the 1970s when the men involved in the operation began having reunions, and continues to the present. Much of the collection is correspondence generated by the secretaries of the organization. Many of the photographs were taken during these reunions. Probably the section of the collection that holds the most interest is the collection of war stories written by these men as reminiscences. These are first person accounts of their experiences as they remembered them. There is also a fairly complete collection of the newsletter published by the organization from the 1970s to the present, called the Basha Blabber, which contains a great deal of information about the operations and the men involved in them.

History

In 1943, at the first Quebec Conference, Major General Orde G. Wingate requested consideration be given to furnishing him with a Light Plane Force to be used to evacuate wounded and sick men from the interior of Burma, from operations then being planned. During the late summer of the same year, Lord Louis Mountbatten, Commander of Allied Forces in the CBI Theater, discussed the details of such a project with General Arnold, Chief of U. S. Army Air Forces. It was at this time that tentative plans were made to form this unit, which was to include light planes, transports, and fighters. General Arnold selected Lt. Col. Philip Cochran and Lt. Col. John Alison to head this project.
In September 1943 the decision was made to include CG4a Gliders and to include glider-snatching equipment on the C-47s. Every available L-1 in the U.S. was requisitioned, new L-5s, C-47s, CG4as, TG5as, and helicopters were shipped. Finally, men were reporting into Goldsboro, North Carolina, where final preparations were made prior to being shipped to Karachi. On February 3, 1944, the first official fighter mission was run to orient the pilots that would later be involved in attacks. On February 12, the B-25s made their initial raid by bombing railroad bridges and firing at targets of opportunity.
Operations continued during the year 1944 until the rains came and made further action impossible. During this time bombing raids were made on the Japanese forces, troops were flown into the area by transport planes and gliders, and wounded soldiers were evacuated to base hospitals by the light planes.
